Faversham Town 0-0 Cray Wanderers
Faversham Town 0-0 Cray Wanderers

Football is a funny game as Jimmy Greaves stated, Cray on Saturday scored eight in victory whilst Faversham lost 2-1, so what would the odds be on a nil-nil scoreline?

Cray were on a great run while Faversham were having one of their worst runs in recent history.

The game started with Cray dominating possession & in the 13th minute they had their first half chance when Jerome Frederico on the right received the ball went on the outside & his shot from an acute angle was saved by Simon Overland.

Faversham were growing in confidence & in the space of two minutes had chances, firstly in the 22nd minute Luke Griffiths latched onto a clearance & his shot from 20 yards went past the post then in the next minute he was put through in the area but under pressure shot wide.

The game went quiet for a while as both teams kept giving the ball away. In the 40th minute a cross into the Cray area was flicked on goal wards by Mark Lovell but it went wide & in the very next minute Cray had a chance when Frederico ran from the halfway before crossing into the area where Lea Dawson appeared but from 8 yards his header went over the bar.

On half time Faversham thought they had scored when firstly Griffiths was put free in the area & his shot from 12 yards was deflected for a corner & from the resulting corner Nick Blue missed it & it ended up in the net but the Referee disallowed it , but no one in the ground knew why, just Faversham’s luck.

The second half started slowly but in the 52nd minute a Danny Walder free kick from 25 yards went over the bar & 8 minutes later Cray nearly opened the scoring when Aaron Rhule sped down the left wing got to the by-line & his low cross to the back post found Michael Power but from 5 yards he stabbed wide.

A minute later Michael Power & Rhule combined leaving Rhule to run down the right & he then passed into the path of Power who from 15 yards shot past the post.

Faversham were now defending for their lives & relying on breakaways, they nearly conceded in the 73rd minute when Frederico on the right saw his driven cross sliced over the bar by Ollie Lee & in doing so injured himself.

Another half chance came in the 77th minute when Dean Carpenter picked up a loose ball & from 30 yards saw his shot flash past the post. Faversham in the last 10 minutes had two chances to snatch a victory when a Walder free kick 30 yards nearly caught Blue out as Walder’s shot came back of Blue’s chest for a corner & then in the second minute off added on time another Walder free kick into the area came out to the side for Liam King but from 10 yards his snapshot went wide.

The final whistle went & Faversham can be proud of their performance & hopefully their season will start now while Cray can go away knowing their good run is still going.
