Eligon looking forward to table top clash

It’s second versus third at the Bauvill Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Chatham Town Women welcome Old Actonians in Division One South East of the Women’s National League with goalkeeper Simone Eligon looking forward to the game.

The Chats went above their opponents last weekend without playing following Actonian’s surprise 5-1 defeat to Cambridge United after Chatham’s game with AFC Sudbury fell to Storm Darragh.

It was a shame for the Chats who had returned to form in style in midweek with a comfortable 3-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet in the last eight of the Women’s Isthmian League Cup – another home win as the home form gets better by the game; a fact that hasn’t been lost on keeper Simone Eligon who told KSN,

“We have done very well at home so far as we have had a lot of home games so far – it seems we have been drawn at home a lot in the different Cups that adds up, but the more this new side keeps working on our patterns and our cohesiveness as we look into the New Year.”

“Beating Actonians on Sunday will be a massive boost for all of us,” Simone admitted.

“Every game, whoever we are playing from now on, is going to be vitally important and we really have to get our heads down and keep going!”

Reflecting on their progress into the last four of the League Cup, the Chats stopper admitted, “It’s really exciting, I am glad we rallied and put on a good performance,” after goals from Amelia Woodgate, Ellie Perkins and Darcy Wells eased the Chats through to the Semi-Finals in a game that came just three days after Simone had seen her side have to dig deep to beat lowly London Seaward in the League 3-1.

“It was a frustrating afternoon! It wasn’t great for me as I felt that I struggled mentally as I had a heavy cold, but I made it back in for the Quarter Final and felt right back in the zone!”

“It was good to get the game in with Dulwich last week and find our form again and build some confidence even though the game at Sudbury was postponed.”

“We know it’s going to be a long season which I haven’t played in quite a while coming off the back of university and I am still definitely getting used to it.”

“I love playing with this back line that we now have and feel like we are really growing together since I came in at the turn of the year and think the trust is growing as well as the cohesiveness as well as the mentality that is growing all the time.”

Coach Keith Boanas has told KSN on many occasions that he wants his side to stop conceding “silly” goals – a point we put to his keeper who said, “It is very frustrating – I am always going to be hard on myself as it is my job to protect the goal.”

“But you have to bounce back and keep going and we have to learn from it, which I hope we are doing.”

“I am really enjoying my football – there is nothing better than winning and playing together and feeling like we are on form!”

Kick off on Sunday at the Bauvill Stadium – Chatham Town Women vs Old Actonians Women – is at 2:30pm.
