Edinburgh – Gills were second best

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh has delivered an honest assessment of his team’s one-sided whitewash at Bolton on Monday night.

A Gary Madine double and further goals from Josh Vela and Sammy Ameobi saw Bolton win and move up to second in Sky Bet League One whilst Gillingham dropped one place to 17th.

The Gills went down 4-0 at the Macron Stadium in a largely one sided affair leaving the boss to reflect on a game where his side were second best across most areas of the pitch:

“I have no complaints,” he said. “Bolton were worthy of their victory. They were the better side.”

“The gulf in the quality and the class were there for all to see. We came up against Championship players.”

“Sometimes you can scrutinise and analyse your own players. We always look and think we could have done better.”

“But Bolton were too much. Physically and quality-wise at times we just couldn’t deal with them.”

“I have no complaints. I am not going to stand here and say anything else. The players gave their all.”

“The decision on the ball at times wasn’t where we had been of late. But we have been truly punished.”

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson saluted his Bolton side and said they sent a message with their 4-0 victory.

Wanderers’ best performance of the season was on Sky Sports as the fourth game of ’10 in 10′, and Parkinson said: “It was good to showcase Bolton Wanderers.

“We showed what a great club this is and it was important to send a message to the rest of the division.

“But also to remind everyone in the country that Bolton Wanderers are alive and kicking and trying to push on.”

Bolton’s latest three points lifted them above Sheffield United and to within one point of leaders Scunthorpe.

And Parkinson was delighted ex-Sheffield Wednesday forward Madine played his part with two goals and a superb all-round display.

“Gary has been part of a team on a terrific run but the goals haven’t come,” said the Trotters chief.

“But they did in this game. He won man of the match and the plaudits. So I am pleased for him.

“He deserved it because he has kept plugging away. However, when you put in quality balls into good areas Gary is very good at getting on the end of it.”

On Wanderers’ handsome win in front of nearly 14,000 spectators, Parkinson added: “It was a good all-round display that had a bit of everything.

“There were good goals from set plays and good goals from open play.

“However, as much as we can enjoy this win we have got to keep our feet firmly on the ground and get ready for a tough game on Saturday at Chesterfield who are fighting for their lives.

“However, when we moved the ball quickly we looked a very dangerous side going forward.”

Gillingham will be hoping to put the poor result swiftly behind them when Milton Keynes Dons come to Priestfield on Saturday afternoon.
