Edinburgh disappointed with Gills loss

Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh had some harsh words for his team after they were defeated 1-0 by Oxford on Monday.

However, the 47 year old does believe he can make the most of the two weeks until his team’s next fixture.

Gillingham were booed off the Priestfield pitch at both half time and full time, and Edinburgh agreed that his team’s performance wasn’t good enough: “I’m bitterly disappointed. It was a performance that was unacceptable from us all.

“I totally and utterly didn’t expect the performance we were shown today. We’ll take full responsibility for that and I can say it was a shock to the system.”

Gillingham have only won once since the start of December, causing fans to question whether or not the former Newport gaffer should keep his job.

Even by Gillingham’s standards this season, their form over the Christmas period has left Edinburgh with a lot to consider: “We were second best all over the pitch today from start to finish. It really surprised me from the players. We were caught on the back foot.

Despite their recent form, which has seen the Gills win just once since the start of December, Edinburgh still expects more from his team and wants to see vast improvements: “Taking Stuart Nelson out of the equation, I believe nobody was at the standard which I expect, not only for themselves but what should be produced.”

Gillingham now have a weekend off, allowing them additional preparation for their next League One game at Oldham on January 14th.

“It’s a performance that needs a lot of time to be pondered, digested and looked at. We have a lot to dissect today.”
