Fans of the Invicta Dynamos came out in force at the weekend to celebrate the club’s Player of the Year awards.Dynamos awards night

After an exciting campaign that saw the side finish third in the NIHL South league, make it to the semi-finals of the Southern Cup and entertain fans in some thrilling games, the club held their annual awards night at the Silver Blades Ice Bowl in Gillingham.

With some categories close to call, Callum Fowler was to pick up the main award of the evening for being the Invicta Dynamos’ Player of the Year.

Supporters’ Player of the Year (in memory of Christopher Rushton) – Chris Douglas. Netminder Chris Douglas scooped the accolade after a fine season that saw him named the NIHL South Division 1’s top goalie by his peers. He was an instant hit with the fans following his summer capture and cemented his place in their affections by taking the time to bid them all farewell after the playoff semi-final exit to the Wightlink Raiders.Dynamos POTY2

With renewed focus and great determination, Fowler became the man to watch in the NIHL’s top tier and his 47 goals and 81 assists gave him 128 points over the season.

Defenceman of the Year – Chris Douglas. The shot stopper made it a double and a look at his stats for 2013/14 will show why. Douglas made 38 appearances for the Mos, played some 2138 minutes and denied all but 116 of the 1499 shots on his net for a save percentage of 92.26%. A figure of defiance in the Dynamos goal, Douglas even attempted to overcome a dislocated shoulder towards the end of the campaign and fans of the club will be hoping he remains in Gillingham for 2014/15.

Forward of the Year – Andy Smith. Mr Phenomenal made a delayed return to the Mos after a short break from the game and 2013/14 saw him edge ever closer to the 1000 point landmark with 91 from the season. 41 goals and 50 assists saw Smith reach 945 points in a Dynamos jersey and he also became the man to pull on that jersey the most – his record of 374 appearances now the highest in the club’s history.

Players’ Player of the Year – Callum Fowler. His performances saw him stand out in the league and his teammates recognised his contribution to the side by singling him out for the Players’ Player award. Fowler’s fantastic campaign saw him rise to fourth in the club’s list of all time highest points’ scorers and the prolific skater now has 293 in just 138 outings for the Dynamos. Will he be back to add to his 136 goals and 203 assists? Mos fans will hope so, rival supporters will hope the EPL comes calling.

Coach’s Player of the Year – Anthony Leone. Described as the perfect captain by his coach, Anthony Leone was important both on and off the ice for the Mos in 2013/14. 23 goals and 26 assists for 49 points saw him make an invaluable contribution over the course of the campaign whilst his drive and determination helped push the team throughout the year.Dynamos POTY
