Dover Athletic FC – A fan preview

When Andy Hessenthaler returned to the Dover dugout in October 2018 he found a club mired in a relegation battle with one win in their first 15 games. By the end of the season Dover had finished 14th pulling comfortably clear of the drop zone.

With a full close and pre-season behind Hessenthaler and a squad now moulded in his own image hopes are high again at the Crabble. BBC Radio Kent’s own Matt Gerrard was happy to share his thoughts with the KSN team on the season ahead for Dover.

Sum up Dover’s close and pre-season business

Very impressive,  the change to a full-time model has allowed us to do our business early.  We have a squad who have gelled and one who can grow together as the majority are on two-year deals.

Dover have added amongst others Paul Rooney (Colchester), Jack Munns (Dagenham), Steven Rigg (Gateshead), Will De Havilland (Maidstone), Oscar Gobern (Eastleigh) and Nassim L’Ghoul (Welling)

What represents a realistic aim for Dover this season

For me this is the most open league in years, where I genuinely think anyone can beat anyone.  We have more squad depth than when we chased the play-offs a couple of years ago and that could be important.  We ended last season as the form side and we need to build on that. A top 10 finish with this squad is more than achievable.

Star signing and why?

Michael Woods was a wonder kid in his youth earning a £5m move to Chelsea, and I think he wants to prove to people he is still a class act after a couple of years.  Andy Hessenthaler rates him after trying to sign him previously and I believe he will be dictate Dover’s play.

If there is a cause for concern what might that be?

Optimism is very high and we still have the feel good factor after the great escape last season, a poor start in what is a difficult early few games may however dent confidence.

Your personal prediction for the season

Being competitive and scoring goals should see an enjoyable season which will hopefully manifest itself with crowds improving as the Hess Express continues to chug along nicely!
