Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Charlton Athletic
Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Charlton Athletic

Charlton were pegged back four minutes into stoppage time at Doncaster on Saturday. That makes it five points the Addicks have surrendered in the final minutes in the last week.

Karl Robinson made two changes to the side ‎that lost to Oxford last week; Patrick Bauer came in for Harry Lennon, who dropped to the bench, and Ben Reeves replaced the injured Stephy Mavididi.

Newcomers Sullay Kaikai and Michal Zyro were again on the bench. Kaikai came on as a late sub, but Zyro was unused.

Doncaster were a poor side, and Charlton dominated throughout. Tariqe Fosu was the star of the show.

His best moment came when ‎he robbed Matty Blair, ran half the length of the pitch, rounded Ian Lawlor, but somehow Tom Anderson managed to get a block in to foil Fosu.

Fosu forced Lawlor to make other saves. Josh Magennis, Mark Marshall and Ben Reeves were amongst those who had chances.

Bauer headed home Jake Forster-Caskey’s deep corner to give‎ the Addicks the lead after 18 minutes.

It was a lead they never looked like losing until the late drama.‎ A poor clearance went straight to Rovers.

Luke McCullough’s shot from the edge of the area was blocked, but the ball looped up for Matty Blair to head home from close range.

Fortuitous it may have been, but a single goal lead is always fragile, and Charlton again paid the price for not taking their chances.
Despite the result, Robinson was happy with his team’s performance and had this to say after the game:

‎”I don’t think they can be too disappointed with their performances. I think every player played really well but we’ve still not won the game and they’ve got one off us by a deflection.

“We had a number of opportunities. Ben (Amos) only had one save (which was straight at him), we’ve come here and done our job and that’s the bit that’s frustrating.

“Everything we did today was to sure things up. They did not create a chance, so we’ve done our job but you have an unlucky deflection and it drops to someone and he scores.

“You don’t take your chances at 1-0. I said this last week, we need to be more ruthless when we go 1-0 up.

“We were excellent today, I don’t think anyone can write any negative thing about our performance.

“The big thing is we’ve just not turned a very comfortable position into three points. We need to find that ruthless edge.”
