Digweed starts new season with win

George Digweed kicked the new clay season off in style with a hard-fought win in South Africa over the weekend.George Digweed

The competition got off to a slow start with George hitting 22/25 and 23/25 in the first two sessions. He got back on track with 50/50 in the third session, but knew he was chasing the eight-ball on Sunday.

Typical of George from Wittersham, he took to his challenge with grit and determination, and managed to turn in a stunning display of shooting to claim the gold.

George shot 24/25 and 23/25 in the two Sunday sessions, taking his total for the day to 97 and for the weekend to 192. This meant he tied with Mark Marshall of Great Britain and Michele Congialni of South Africa for the lead.

So a shoot-off was held to decide the gold medal winner, and after tying with Mark on 23 each, George emerged victorious from the sudden death shoot-out to get the season off to a great start.

“It’s always a pleasure coming to South Africa,” George said. “Great people, beautiful scenery and wonderful weather. It’s brilliant every time.

“This year it was extra special because of how hard I had to fight for the win. Victory is always that little bit sweeter when you’ve really had to work for it.

“Mark and Michele were on top form this weekend, and they’re yet more proof of what a healthy position this sport is in at the moment. There’s competition right across the board.

“This season looks set to be one of the most hard-fought ever, and I’m relishing the challenge.”
