Denly knows Bay face tough test

Herne Bay jumped into the Ryman One South Play Off places in midweek with a come from behind win against Sittingbourne which left the Manager of the Month Sam Denly a very happy man.

“I thought we were outstanding second half on Tuesday the way we came back,” he told KSN.

“We had a few words at half time and first 25 minutes had a real go and were rewarded with two goals and another three points.”

Behind to a Stephen Ita goal just before the break – the first goal that Jack Delo has conceded in 641 minutes of playing time, the Bay recovered brilliantly after the break to draw level through Danny Williams before Mark Lovell’s header sealed the win and took Denly’s side up 4th in the Division.

“We’d been knocking on the door for a while before Danny scored,” the Bay boss explained, “we needed to be more clinical in front of goal and we changed a few things round and thankfully it worked and we got back into the game and soon after a great header from Love’s won us the game.”

“All of a sudden we reverted to same as they had their best spell where they hit they post, but in the end I think we deserved the points. It was typical Lovell goal – either Mark or Steve – a great header from a good ball put into the box losing his man at the back stick for a great finish – really pleased after a tough night.”

Whilst his side is flying high, Tuesday’s defeat left Sittingbourne five points adrift in the bottom three as Nick Davis’ side lost their 13th consecutive game.

“Football can be a cruel game at times. They’re one nil up and Nick must have been thinking that Tuesday was the night that they stop their slide,” Denly said.

“He was and still is a great player and as a manager I’m sure he’ll bounce back and come back stronger. They had a good run after we beat them on the opening weekend of the season, and I hope that they can now do it again as we don’t have to play them again. He’s a top bloke and I’m sure Nick and his team will bounce back.”

“We’re up there now on merit – we’re a good side; I’ve been saying that all season. We’re winning our games in hand and the League is looking good for us at the moment. But we wont rest on our laurels – we’ve got a few missing at Carshalton on Saturday (who are also flying) so we’ll have to work hard and go again.”

“It’ll be a difficult game for us without doubt. We’ve told the lads that this run can’t go on forever – you can’t win games of football every single week – it’s a competitive League this season and to have been on the run that we’ve been on is absolutely fantastic so we’ll keep going and see where it takes us!”

“We haven’t played on Carshalton’s 3G pitch yet so it’ll be different! We played on Whyteleafe’s in the Cup and on Maidstone’s, but haven’t been there yet so we know what to expect – we know its going to be a difficult game.”

“We’ll keep plugging away and if we do that then we’ll win more than we lose! We’ll take it one game at a time and if we do, we’ll see where we at two weeks before Easter rather than two weeks before Christmas!”
