Dartford 0-1 St Albans City

Shaun Jeffers’ sensational strike gives St Albans the three points in an entertaining game at Princes Park in the National League South. Charlie Sheringham earlier had a penalty saved by Michael Johnson.

Prior to the game Dartford had announced the loan signing of former player and fan favourite Alfie Pavey from Barnet. He was a named as a sub as Steve King made two changes to the side that beat Maidstone on Saturday. McCallum and Sheringham were brought in to the side as Barham and the injured Braham-Barrett made way.

It was an entertaining first half as both sides created chances but neither were able to break the deadlock as both goalkeepers impressed.

Craig King was the first called in to action as he dived to save a free kick from Jeffers at his near post.

McCallum caused St Albans problems down the left all half and when he fired in a low cross Husin was unable to connect cleanly and it was a comfortable save for Johnson

A ball over the top sent Sheringham running behind the defence but his half volleyed first time effort from an angle was smartly saved by Johnson.

Dartford really should have taken the lead when Husin and McCallum combined down the left with some neat passing. McCallum crossed in for Romain who headed over from six yards out.

The visitors came back at Dartford and after Jeffers was played in by Banton he twisted and turned but his shot was an easy save for King at his near post.

As the half was heading to a close Jeffers had a big chance to put St Albans ahead when he was picked out in the box by Sundire. He had time to take a touch and place his effort but King got down superbly to push the ball wide.

Dartford had the last attempt of the half when Berkeley-Agyepong cut inside from the left but his effort was weak and easily saved.

The Darts started the second half brightly but were unable to trouble Johnson with Husin scuffing a shot wide and Romain firing an effort from range over the bar.

The home side were given a golden opportunity to take the lead when Husin was brought down in the box. Sheringham took responsibility but his strike was a nice height for Johnson who saved well diving to his right.

Jeffers and Banton were combining well and after some more good play Jeffers fired an effort at goal that cannoned off the crossbar. Jeffers then had another effort from outside the box that curled just wide.

The impressive McCallum again went racing away down the left, cut back and put in a delightful cross but Barham could only head into the side netting.

In the ninetieth minute the away side took the lead when Jeffers scored. He had shown earlier how dangerous he was from range and this time there was no stopping his effort. Thirty yards out his effort hit the underside of the bar and bounced back up in to the roof of the net.

Dartford had little time to find a way back in to the game and were unable to cause the visitors any further problems.
