D-Day for Gillingham future
D-Day for Gillingham future

After what seems like an eternity since the bulk of the Kent football season came to a Coronavirus induced conclusion, the future of Gillingham’s SKYBet League One season will finally be known today.

Meeting after meeting have taken place in the past weeks; proposal after proposal have been tabled from points per game, “weighted” points per game and even an expanded Play Off scheme that for a short time seemed to give the Gills faithful hope that Steve Evans’ side may indeed play again this season.

But with each step forward, there was one, two or even three more obstacles put in a resumptions way with the cost of testing being a huge one, with estimates of £150,000 per club, and naturally enough for clubs with nothing to play for, there was a growing reluctance to commit to continue!

With the EFL now having the Championship restarting in a couple of weeks and League Two electing what now seems weeks ago to pull the plug on their season – with the exception of the Play Offs – it seems that we have now finally reached decision day.

Way back in May, the League announced its’ preference that is still the likely scenario that the clubs could back today which would promote Coventry and Rotherham with a four team Play Off involving Wycombe, Oxford, Portsmouth and Fleetwood.

Proposals from Peterborough, Barnsley, Tranmere and Ipswich have all been tabled and discussed which has brought us to today’s final vote. What is clear is even if the Gills season were to continue, Evans’ hands would be somewhat tied playing wise as for what could have been their nine remaining games, the Gills boss only had eight players available whose contracts go beyond the end of the month as all the club’s loan players have returned to their parent clubs.

With Chairman Paul Scally already saying that continuing the season is unaffordable and is impossible, it seems that finally after the months of uncertainty, we will at last be able to draw a veil on Kent’s 2019/2020 football season once and for all…
