Crusaders respond with back to back wins

It was two wins from two this weekend for Kent Crusaders as they picked up an away victory over Ipswich on Saturday before a dominant win over Liverpool on Sunday at Barking Abbey Leisure Centre.

On Saturday, Kent finished with a hard-fought 66-62  victory over Ipswich in Ipswich.

Sean Nealon-Lino converted a huge three down the stretch that proved to be the dagger as Kent bounced back from their loss to Thames Valley last weekend.

John Shodipo had a strong start to finish with 19 to lead Kent, Obi Agu had 14, whilst Nealon-Lino finished with 11.

Big man Leigh Greenan finished with a game-high 20 to Ipswich and caused multiple problems for Kent early.

“Today we did well to win” Head Coach Lloyd Gardner said.

“It wasn’t a great performance from us and it’s a difficult place to come and get a win. We did a good job at getting through some adversity which I was pleased with.”

On Sunday, Crusaders faced little resistance on their way to a 101-37 rout of Liverpool.

Dan Akin and Tim Shodipo led Kent with 19 points a piece, Amin Adamu had 18, and John Shodipo joined them in double figures with 10 points, as all ten players got on the scoresheet.

A relatively evenly matched first quarter saw Crusaders lead by five, but in the second period, Kent increased the defensive intensity, holding Liverpool to just five points whilst scoring 24 to have a 24 point halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same; Amin Adamu opened the period with three consecutive dunks to add insult to injury as Kent cruised the rest of the way.

“I was pleased with the way we played as a group today, I thought it was better,” Gardner said.

“We shared the ball. Our defensive execution was good, we played with good energy. The main thing we talked about coming in was being unselfish, sharing the ball, and i thought we had an excellent game for that. A good spread of scorers, we made the extra pass and that’s what I was most pleased with.”

Kent, now 16-3 in third place, will look to get a streak going toward the end of the regular season, as they have a week off before taking on Nottingham Hoods on March 18 in Nottingham, before rounding out the season against London Westside and Team Newcastle University.
