Two alumni from the Crusaders academy at The Canterbury High School have committed to new opportunities for next season, as Ollie Dykes has signed his first professional contract and James Lloyd has committed to Anoka Ramsey Community College in Minnesota.

Dykes, a 7’2 centre, has signed with Martinez Valls, who compete in the Primera Division Nacional in Spain. Dykes joined Crusaders in 2014, as a beginner. Over his 3 years he progressed through the u16s, u18s and NBL4 Men as well as playing a key role for Canterbury in the EABL.

“I couldn’t be happier for Ollie,” said Canterbury Head Coach Jesse Sazant. “The transformation he has gone through over the 3 years is phenomenal. The way he has personally matured and developed, transformed his body and gone from a beginner to a senior player has been brilliant to be a part of.”

Dykes, who averaged 4.3 point s and 4.6 rebounds in the EABL last year, added, “I’m glad to be given this massive opportunity thanks to Crusaders and their coaching staff. I signed with Martinez Valls as it is the right step for my career and is the right level to compete at in my rookie season. I’m looking forward to learning a new language, learning a different style of basketball and playing at this level.”

Lloyd graduated from Canterbury in 2016. After playing for Northern Iowa Community College last year, he has now transferred to Anoka Ramsey Community College on scholarship.

The 6’3 guard was part of the Crusaders programme and Canterbury Academy for 6 years before departing to the States. In 2015-16 he was the EABL’s leading scorer and named to the EABL East Conference first team whole also playing for Brixton Topcats in NBL2.

“JL had a tough year in the States this past season,” said Sazant. “But he never made excuses and never let up. He has worked incredibly hard to get this further opportunity. I am sure he will hit the ground running and have a good season.”

Lloyd, who has already flown out to join the team for pre-season, added, “I’m pleased to be back on the court with Anoka-Ramsey. It was great working out with Crusaders all summer. I’m grateful for another opportunity to show what I’ve got and excited to see what’s to come.”
