Croydon secured a 2–0 victory over Rochester United in a match that saw plenty of drama, chances and controversy, with Rochester reduced to ten men midway through the first half.

The opening stages were cagey, with neither side able to create a clear opening. Croydon began to threaten in the 13^th minute when Tom Barton drove a low ball across the face of goal, but nobody was able to get the decisive touch.

Rochester began to look the more dangerous side as the half progressed, with the visitors appealing for a penalty in the 23^rd minute. Their claims were waved away by the referee. Just a minute later, Croydon were themselves appealing for a spot-kick, but once again the referee was unmoved.

Croydon’s Cameron Macmillan then found space in the 28^th minute and fired narrowly wide, before Rochester produced another promising attack three minutes later. Kevin Dance drove forward and sent a cross into the box, with Aston Freeman just managing to get a touch on the ball. The Croydon goalkeeper was able to save comfortably.

The game then exploded into life in the 32^nd minute. Chaos unfolded inside the Croydon penalty area as Rochester came desperately close to opening the scoring. Liam Wilkins struck the post as Rochester somehow failed to find the net.

Dance tried his luck from distance in the 34^th minute, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Rochester’s task became considerably harder. Tony Whitaker was shown a red card after conceding a free kick for denying a goalscoring opportunity, leaving Rochester with ten men.

Croydon immediately took advantage. In the 39^th minute, Tom Barton stepped up to a low free-kick and curled his effort into the corner to give Croydon the lead.

The drama continued on the touchline moments later as Rochester manager Andy Pierce was sent off.

Croydon doubled their advantage in the 42^nd minute. Barton was involved again, delivering the ball into the box, where Cameron Macmillan was on hand to tap home and make it 2–0.

Half-time: Croydon 2–0 Rochester

Despite being down to ten men, Rochester started the second half with plenty of possession and continued to look for a way back into the match.

Dance remained a threat and tested the Croydon defence again in the 68^th minute, shooting over from just outside the box.

Two minutes later, Croydon almost added a third when Barton found himself at a tight angle and fired towards goal, but the Rochester goalkeeper was equal to it.

Rochester continued to press. In the 72^nd minute, Kevin Dance tried his luck again, forcing another good save from the Croydon goalkeeper.

Tod Bamber then got onto a good ball into the box in the 74^th minute and sent a shot towards goal, but Chris Swift produced an important save.

Rochester kept pushing, with Liam Wilkins seeing an effort blocked by a defender and diverted out for a throw-in in the 77^th minute.

Three minutes later, Rochester thought they had pulled one back when Ben Wyness found the net, but the linesman’s flag was already raised for offside.

Rochester’s late attempts to find a consolation goal ultimately came to nothing. A free kick in the 90^th minute was headed well over the bar, before Ramone Lewis attempted to beat the offside trap in stoppage time and race through one-on-one. Once again, the linesman’s flag went up.

The final whistle confirmed a 2–0 victory for Croydon, with Barton and Macmillan’s first-half goals proving decisive. Rochester battled impressively despite playing the majority of the match with ten men, but Croydon’s early advantage was enough to secure all three points.
