Cray Wanderers v Phoenix Sports preview

Cray Wanderers meet Phoenix Sports in a local derby at Hayes Lane on Wednesday night in the Bostik League Division One South with both teams looking to keep in touch with the play off places.

Despite having a number of regular first teamers out injured or suspended The Wands have won their last two matches and the Under 23 side players who have stepped up have done really well when called upon, the latest being Ken Charles who made his debut at the weekend along with new signing Kyron Lightfoot.

On Saturday Tony Russell’s men won 3-0 at Horsham with veteran striker Michael Power on target again from the penalty spot along with a double from defender Marcus Evans .

Phoenix make the short journey over from Barnehurst on the back of a 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Bostik Premier side Enfield Town and they haven’t won a game in normal time since 9th September, when they beat Hastings Utd 3-0, but they did knock SCEFL Glebe out of the cup in the previous round on penalties. Steve O’Boyle will be keen to see results pick up again with Sports currently in twelfth place.

Cray sit in eighth just off the top six, with only six points the difference between Carshalton in sixth and VCD in thirteenth it’s all very tight for the top half as teams look to push on into Autumn.

With Phoenix moving over from the North Division in the summer the two sides met for the first time in a league match back in August and it finished 0-0 at The Mayplace Ground and it should be another close fought thing again on Wednesday night.
