Cray Wanderers v Greenwich Borough – Preview

Cray Wanderers go in to their local derby with Greenwich Borough at Hayes Lane on Sunday afternoon knowing that a win could virtually seal the Bostik League Division One South East title, despite a recent dip in form that has seen them only pick up one point from the last three games.    Last weekend Cray lost 1-0 away at Whitstable Town, without the inured Bradley Pritchard in midfield The Wands have struggled to dominate game as they had over most of the campaign, but it’s testament to Tony Russell’s squad that they have continued their good form over the campaign despite missing several key players for long spells including Michael Power, Aaron Rhule and Barney Williams.

The Wands did have a sixteen point lead in mid-March, but that is now down to ten with 72 points and 5 games remaining, Hasting Utd and Horsham can still just catch The Back & Ambers, but realistically Ashford Utd have the best chance to  topple them now, as the teams meet at Hayes Lane next Saturday and they also have five left to play rather than the four league matches remaining for the pair from Sussex.

Greenwich Borough make the short trip over from Eltham have had a difficult season so far with several managerial and personnel changes, they currently sit bottom of the league with 27pts from 32 games played, one point behind Guernsey and four off Faversham Town.

When the sides met at The Badgers Sports Ground on the opening day of the season, The Wands won 3-0 with two goals from Michael Power and one from Jerome Frederico.

A good crowd is expected for this derby match, with season ticket holders for Premier League, Football League and National League clubs able to watch the match for £5 on production of their ticket at the gate. Normal prices are £10 and £5 for concessions, which is still a bargain for the quality of the football that Cray Wanderers have played at home this season.
