Cray Wanderers 4-2 Tooting & Mitcham United

A see-saw London Senior Cup match ended with Cray Wanderers beating Tooting and Mitcham United.

Reggie Ray hit an early shot for Cray that was well held by Tooting goalkeeper Tom Theobald then Gary Lockyer finished superbly only to see a flag raised for offside.

In the thirteenth minute, the Wands went ahead. George Porter got free down the right wing and delivered a cross that demanded a finish. Yahya Bamba obliged by coming in from the left and heading powerfully into the bottom corner.

Bamba looked threatening again shortly after when he cut in from the left and fired just beyond the far post.

If it appeared to be plain sailing for the Wands, the visitors had other ideas and Blake Loyza had a shot blocked wide by Sam Wood after Cray had struggled to clear.

Once again Bamba cut in and shot but Theobald got behind it and saved low down, then Kieran Campbell curled an effort narrowly wide at the other end. Cameron Black headed just beyond the post for Cray then Nathan Best crossed for Tooting but Loyza couldn’t turn it home.

After the break, a long clearance gave Campbell an early opportunity and seeing Wands goalkeeper Shaun Rowley struggling to get back, he shot first time but screwed it wide of the near post. However, after ten second half minutes had passed, he did level. He was deemed to have been fouled in the penalty area and took the responsibility to fire home from the spot.

One minute later, Tooting went ahead. A sloppy pass out from the back was intercepted by Loyza and he took full advantage with a clinical finish.

Alfie Evans looked for an immediate response but his shot was saved low by Theobald before it was Cray’s turn to score twice in quick succession. Bamba raced through and lobbed the Tooting goalkeeper to complete his brace, then substitute Nyren Clunis sent Lockyer through and he made no mistake.

As the game moved into the last fifteen minutes, Cray looked to put the tie to bed. Lockyer had a shot deflected onto the post and out then Wood had a shot saved after more good work by man of the match Bamba.

Marcus Whittaker had a long range effort saved by Rowley before Cray put the icing on the cake with a fourth two minutes from time. Evans hit a fierce shot that came back out off the post and the visitors couldn’t get it away. Eventually it fell into the path of Clunis and he fired home from the edge of the area.

Cray will face Fisher in the next round on a date to be agreed.
