Cray Valley PM vs Lewes – Preview

Promotion chasing Cray Valley PM entertain Lewes on Tuesday evening in the Isthmian League Premier division.

This game is a rearranged fixture from one abandoned in early December. It appeared that Lewis were heading for a victory when the Rooks’ winger Marcel McIntosh sustained a bad injury thirteen minutes from time. Referee Kane Dempster had no option other than to abandon the match once it was known that the player couldn’t be moved, and that the ambulance wouldn’t be arriving for some time. Danny Bassett had opened the scoring for the visitors in first half stoppage time and Gianluca Botti scored a second ten minutes after the restart.

On Saturday, had Steve McKimm’s Millers won at fellow title hopefuls Billericay Town, they would have gone to the top of the table. However, they went down to a two-one defeat in a match that could have gone either way.

Goals by Bradley Williams and Femi Akinwande put the Essex side two up in the first half but Tom Beere pulled one back in stoppage time before the break. The Millers dominated the second period but couldn’t find an equaliser and dropped below the hosts in the league table. Cray Valley now sit in fourth place in the table, two points behind league leaders Dartford.

Their opponents on Tuesday, Lewes, had a tight win on Saturday in a Sussex derby at Hastings United. Bassett scored the only goal with fifteen minutes remaining to allow the visitors the bragging rights.

Away from home, Lewes have won four, drawn five and lost five. Their victory at Hastings ended a run of ten games without a win.

While Lewes may feel that they have ‘unfinished business’, the Millers will be looking upon this as a second chance in a match that they may well have lost and will want to make the most of the opportunity. Due to the circumstances of the abandonment, it has been agreed that there will be free admission for the evening so the Millers will be hoping for a healthy attendance.
