Whitstable Town are looking to put the “Oyster” on top of an incredible twelve months by completing a domestic double on Sunday by winning the Kent Senior Trophy for the fourth time.

After winning the FA Vase so gloriously at Wembley eleven months ago, Jamie Coyle’s side have taken all before them this season and have marched away with the SCEFL title, winning it before Easter. But on Sunday, they face the SCEFL form side Punjab United in the Kent Senior Trophy Final and Coyle knows that his side must be at their very best to add more silverware to an incredible season.
Speaking to KSN after his side came from behind on Tuesday to win their last home game of the season 3-1 against Hollands & Blair, Coyle told us, “It was a really competitive game on Tuesday – I think they are rightly one of the form teams in the League having only conceded a couple recently and they are on a fantastic run which has given them a play-off chance. We knew it would be a tough game and a perfect game in truth for our preparation for the Final on Sunday!”
“We went a goal down but responded magnificently! We’ve rotated things since we won the title – there were six changes at Holmesdale on Saturday then more Tuesday night – it shows the quality and the strength in depth that we have in the squad and its given us a headache now as to who starts at the Gallagher on Sunday – unfortunately there will be players who miss out; it’s a great place to be in as a manager when you have to leave players who probably deserve to play on the sidelines!”
“There’s no doubt that by having Sunday’s final to look forward to it kept the players focused one hundred percent! We said to them once we got the point at Rusthall to win the League that we still had Sunday to look forward to and momentum is huge in football – you don’t just want to lay the tools down because you’ve won the League, it was important to keep the performances high.
“It’s gone back up again in the last two games as we said to the boys that if they want to play on Sunday, they will have to put in performances that would warrant a Cup Final place, and they have most certainly delivered that. The attitude and the dedication of the players have been phenomenal all season and it puts us in a great place now for Sunday!”
Looking ahead to Sunday, Coyle admitted, “Punjab are absolutely flying and are the form team in the League at the moment, and they have still got a massive opportunity to get into the Play Offs. They will be full of confidence and up for the Final and it’s been important that we have matched their terrific form in the last week, and I think we have done that!”
“We have a really good relationship with Chipie and his management team and we have helped each other out in the past and will continue to do so because they are good people! They have done a fantastic job – we were absolutely gutted for them that they didn’t make the Final in the Vase, but they still have plenty to play for in this Final and possibly the play-offs.”
“And I do believe that if they do get in the play-offs they could take some stopping and for me will be the favourites to go up. Sunday will be a really tough game but one everyone should be looking forward to!”
“I think it’s going to be a really, really top Cup Final with a lot of people there – they will pull a big crowd, we will do the same and I think it will be a real good advert for Step Five football, SECFL football and Kent football, I really, really do!
