Coulson reflects on Bromley move

Winger Luke Coulson has said that Ebbsfleet United’s run to the playoff semi final last season against all the odds is something he will “never forget” following his move to Bromley.

Ebbsfleet are currently in a state of financial restructure following their history making 2017-18 season in which they finished sixth in the National League – a point the club had never reached before.

“We had that first season we got to the playoff semi final , that was something I’m never going to forget” said Coulson.

“Obviously it didn’t all work out in the end and the club has obviously changed dramatically” he said.

The Stonebridge Road club lost to eventual promotion winners Tranmere Rovers at the semi final stage of the playoffs in May after beating Aldershot on penalties.

“Going to Aldershot and winning in a playoff quarter final even though we weren’t being paid showed the strength of the squad and the staff at the time”.

This season has seen a lot of changes at Ebbsfleet with Coulson the latest in a long list of names to leave the club over the last two months including manager Daryl McMahon.

Garry Hill has now taken over in the dugout at Stonebridge Road.

“It’s one of those where there are so many changes going on, from day to day you’re expecting something new and each day we weren’t surprised that someone else had left” said the former Cardiff City winger. “It was just dealing with it as well as we could.

“It’s all in the papers about the tax bill and being paid late nine months out of 12. It wasn’t a place that you wanted to be but the strength of the squad showed by our performances on the pitch and how we kept it together.”

“A lot of people have left as well as the manager and I felt like it was my time to leave as well.”

Just two days before Bromley’s game at Gateshead, Coulson signed for the Ravens, saying manager Neil Smith was the reason for his move across North Kent.

“I had a lot of conversations with him and he was telling me about the direction of the club. What’s going to be happening and the changes that are going to be made over the next two or three years.

“He’s speaking about the stability of the club and what I can bring to the club and what the club can bring to me and that was a big factor in moving.”

And the winger believes this could be a move for the long term following short stints in recent years: “I’ve had a few clubs in a few different years. Moving from Eastleigh to Barnet and then over to Ebbsfleet so I definitely want some stability where I can play my game and do as well as I possibly can.”

He made his debut on Tyneside on Saturday afternoon but was substituted after 56 minutes as Bromley lost 2-0.
