Corinthian 2-2 Hebburn Town (3-4 pens)

Corinthian were to bow out of the FA Vase at the semi-final stage thanks to the lottery of the dreaded penalty shoot-out against Hebburn Town.

It was a heroic performance from Corinthian against the bookies favourite for the game, and Michael Golding can be rightly proud of his side’s performance.

The game started slowly which you could understand as the prize was a place at Wembley, the first half chance came in the seventh minute when a ball into the area saw Luke Tanner attempt to flick it in but his effort went over the bar.

Five minutes late Andres Tobin on the left cut in and his shot was saved by Mark Foden.  Hebburn’s first half chance came in the 13th minute when Amar Purewal received the ball 25 yards out, and saw his shot curl over the bar.

Two minutes later and Hebburn could and maybe should have taken the lead when a free kick to the back post was knocked back along the six yard box where Darren Lovey appeared but he shot over the bar unchallenged.

Jack Mahoney latched onto a long ball and from 25 yards saw his shot saved. Two minutes later a Hebburn free kick into the area was headed goal wards but Aiden Prall tipped it around the post for a corner.

In the 36th minute Thomas Potter on the counter attack on the right cut in, his shot was pushed around the post for a corner. Half time arrived and both camps would have been happy as they were still in the game.

Half Time 0-0

The second half was only three minutes old when Corinthian took the lead, Emmanual Oloyede on the right put Tobon through and once he had the ball under control he turned one defender went into the area, attempted to go round the keeper but he had other ideas and tripped him.

A penalty was given and luckily for him he only received a booking rather than a red card, up stepped Oscar Housego, hitting his penalty straight down the middle to make it 1-0.

In the 55th minute Darren grove driving forward saw his low cross shot deflect for a corner, a minute later a cross into the six yard box was headed goal wards by Greame Armstrong but saved by Prall.

Then in the 76th minute controversy occurred when a ball into the Corinthian area saw Michael Richardson lunge for the ball and hit Prall on the goal line.

A few players from each side came running in to give their views, the referee took his time, then once everything had calmed down sent him off.

In the 81st minute Hebburn nearly equalised when a free kick 22 yards out taken by Michael McKeown was tipped onto the bar by Prall, it then rebounded back off his back and was cleared from danger.

The game was getting close to finishing and Wembley was within touching distance for Corinthian, then disaster struck in the 88th minute. A ball into the area saw Jack Bath foul a Hebburn player in the area, the referee awarded a penalty. Up stepped Armstrong and he hit it straight down the middle to make it 1-1.

The full time whistle came after seven minutes of added on time so extra time was needed to separate these teams.

Full Time 1-1

The first half of extra time was uneventful until the 100th minute when Hebburn took the lead, a cross to the back post saw Armstrong rise and head home from three yards.

Corinthian came back into the game in the 107th minute Oloyede received the ball on the left, went into the area where he was a fouled and the referee awarded another penalty. This time up stepped Jamie Billings, he shot straight down the middle, game on, half time arrived fifteen minutes to get to Wembley.

The second half saw both sides try their best but nothing concrete happened until the 120th minute, a free kick into the area by Billings caught Foden out, he dropped the ball but one of his defenders was alert and cleared of the line.

The full time whistle went and it was time for penalties.
