Conway announces retirement

Mike Conway has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the season from racing, it brings the chequered flag down on a stellar motorsport career.

A two time Le Mans 24 hour race winner, and a  two time World Endurance Championship race winner and former Indy Car race driver, will finish the season with the Toyota WEC team with their final two races at Barcelona and Monza before the curtain finally falls.

In the UK he won the British F3 title in 2006 dominating that series, as well as contesting multiple sports car races around the world. In the WEC he has won 20 times, with a further 5 podium finishes. He also has podium finishes in Petit Le Mans, Sebring 12 hours and the Daytona 24 hours on his CV.

It wasn’t always successful for Conway though, with a crash at the 2010 Indianpolis 500 with Ryan Hunter-Reay that saw his car launched into the air, which resulted in a broken leg and a fractured vertebrae. Testament to his determination though he was back in an IndyCar and won his first race at Long Beach in April 2011.

At the 2025 Indy 500 during the race Conway lost control of his car, spinning in front of Will Power and making contact with Power causing him to hit the inside wall. At the same time, Conway’s car turned around backwards and flew airborne into the fence topside first. Conway was uninjured in the incident, but due to damage he was unable to finish the race and was scored in 29th position. He later finished in third place in Toronto, his best result of the season.

He went on to win at Belle isle Park in 2013, before in 2014 he won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach as well as the Toronto Doubleheader for Ed Carpenter Racing.

Conway still has the chance to take a third WEC title, and he and his teammates will be pushing hard in the number even Toyota at the final two races of the season to try and finish is career in style.

Announcing his retirement Conway said: “It has been quite an emotional journey, there have been so many ups and downs. Different racing categories all the way up to where I have been now. The last 13 seasons with Toyota, which has really been a place I can call home.

“This journey all started when I was eight years old, just something me and my dad decided to go and do one day, and from there the years just rolled into each other, and you go up through the categories. Formula Renault, Formula 3, GP2, some F1 testing which was pretty cool.

“I ended up going to America, we signed a contract to do Indy Car for a year, and I had no idea about ovals or anything and it was a bit of a baptism of fire honestly. I had some crashes and ended up having some success on tracks that I did actually like, which was the street courses.

“I ended up looking at sports cars as an alternative as well and that is kind of what brought me here to Toyota, which has been home for 13 seasons, and one that has been really fun. It has been an incredible journey and one that I couldn’t have imagined. There has been lots of cool teammates along the way, we have had many many laughs and still so.

“There have been lots of victories not just as a manufacturer as a drivers world titles and Le Mans. That one got away from us so many times for the team, with car number seven as well. We tried many many times, and we had four or five second places at that place before we actually managed to win in 2021 with Jose and Kamui, so that was a real special one and one I will cherish for a long time.

“And then obviously the most recent one which was 2026, which felt really special as well. There are lots of thankyou’s, which first and foremost has got to be family. You know my dad, mum, sister and brother they have been part of this journey for a long time. Dad has been a huge part of that and he is sorely missed today. Even my little family now that is growing, my little one now is three, three and a half and I want to be there to see her grow up and part of it. My wife for her support and a big shout out to Mark Blundell who has been with me over the years you know, for the last twenty odd years now we have worked together. We have been through a lot you know, so a big thank you to Mark, the support is much appreciated.

“There have been some great teammates along the way, especially with Toyota. I have learned a lot from you guys and it has been fun sharing cars with you. Honestly, I think all the moments outside of the car has been some of the most memorable.

“There are so many thankyous for everyone that I have worked with in the factory, not just on the race team but everyone that is here full time. Thank you to everyone in Japan for all your hard work, making this team such a success.
