Concord Rangers 1-1 Welling United

Once again, Brad Quinton rang the changes as he looked to change Welling United’s fortunes when visiting Concord Rangers.

Quinton’s team came out looking like they meant business and Rowan Liburd headed wide from Nathan Green’s cross in the early skirmishes. Lyle Della-Verde then almost marked his second Welling debut with a goal but his shot was tipped over by Chris Haigh.

Liburd had a header blocked by a defender and Ben Ward-Cochrane had a shot charged down to slow it down for Haigh to claim. Welling continued to press and Haigh made another good save from Green’s twenty yard effort.

Charlee Hughes shot well wide for Concord from a long way out before Aron Pollock headed over from a corner. Lamar Reynolds drew a low save out of Reice Charles-Cook as Concord enjoyed a good spell but Welling were soon back on the attack and Frazier Shaw made a crucial block to thwart Liburd.

Ward-Cochrane drew a further diving save out of Haigh before Green shot across the face of goal then both teams appealed for penalties. Concord appeared to have a good shout when Alex Wall tumbled to the ground then it was the Wings’ turn to feel aggrieved as Shaw handled in the box.

Just before half time, Charles-Cook made a stunning save to tip Reynolds’ drive round the post.

Three minutes after the re-start, the Beach Boys went ahead. Alex Wall crumbled under a challenge just inside the penalty area and gave Charles-Cook no chance when he arrowed it into the bottom corner.

However, three minutes later, parity was restored when Della-Verde sent an unstoppable drive beyond Haigh and into the far corner. He almost scored again soon after when he shot wide after more good work by Ward-Cochrane.

Ayo Taniwomo got forward for Welling and drove in a fierce cross that Liburd dived to head wide before Concord had another good spell. Ryan Scott met a corner but headed wide then Reynolds shot towards the near post but Charles-Cook beat it out. Their next chance should have produced a goal when Sam Blackman shot over after a long shot had been blocked into his path.

The final half chance went Welling’s way when Anthony Cook’s low cross struck Billy Roast’s foot but rebounded into Haigh’s arms.

A point apiece was probably a fair outcome and Welling know that if they can win their next game, at Hemel Hempstead, it could turn out to be a good point that they won at Concord.
