Despite Jamie Philpot’s brace, Queens Park Rangers Under 21s claimed a five-four win at Chislehurst Glebe in the third round of the London Senior Cup.

Although the weather was terrible, the fare on offer was not, and the healthy crowd that braved the conditions were well rewarded. In the previous round, the Rs won seven-three at Cray Valley PM and they were on the right end of another goal-fest at Foxbury.

They went ahead in the sixth minute when Jake Coomes pulled it back to Riowan Hassan, he squared it to Rohan Vaughan and he made no mistake from fifteen yards.

Parity was restored three minutes later when Khavarn Williams crossed low and Jaden Coleman finished at close range via the post.

Cory Adjetey-Brew crossed to Vaughan whose shot drew a brilliant save out of the Foxes Under 23 goalkeeper Harrison Carnell-Davis, and the visitors’ striker had another opportunity when Alex Aoraha played him in down the left channel but he blasted over the near post.

Just before the half hour mark, the visitors went back ahead. Philip Sanyaolu shot from out wide and a deflection deceived Carnell-Davis on the zippy surface and it found its way into the net.

Two minutes later the Foxes’ goalkeeper was left totally stranded when a twenty-yard effort from Coomes was deflected inside the far post.

Aoraha fired over before Chislehurst Glebe pulled one back five minutes before the break. Philpot’s clever back-heel gave Nathan Mampono space and he slotted it into the bottom corner.

Coomes was denied by another outstanding save by Carnell-Davis, but the Foxes goalkeeper was helpless to stop the visitors from restoring their two goal lead. A slick passing move stretched the Glebe defence and Aoraha was given space and time to fire home.

That wasn’t the end of the first half scoring, though. Philpot nicked possession in the Rs penalty area and was fouled. He got straight up and took the spot-kick himself, blasting it past Joel Halliday.

Early in the second period Tylon Smith glanced a header wide, then Carnell-Davis made a good save from Aoraha. Kaleb Dyke tried his luck but his long range effort flew well wide then Vaughan diverted Charlie Street’s low cross the wrong side of the far post.

Spotting Halliday off his line, Philpot tried to beat him from thirty-five yards, however, he was unable to get sufficient elevation and the goalkeeper was able to get back to save.

As the hour mark approached, the visitors scored their fifth. Coomes crossed and Hassan finished with a powerful header.

Williams had a couple of efforts when coming in from the left, first he drove straight into the grateful arms of Halliday, then he struck a low shot that the Rs goalkeeper fielded comfortably.

Philpot’s clean strike from twenty-five yards flew just over before the visitors had a great chance to extend their lead when a quick free kick allowed Fraser Neill a run on goal with a one on one. Although he beat, Carnell-Davis, his shot went beyond the far post.

Whilst it might have been expected that the young, full-time team be fitter, Glebe finished strongly and scored their fourth goal in the last minute of regulation time. Philpot read Street’s intention with a throw in back to Halliday and charged him down. The goalkeeper tried to kick it clear but it hit the Foxes all time record goalscorer and rebounded back into the net.

Then, in stoppage time, he almost forced a penalty shoot-out and completed his hat-trick, when his twenty yard strike went inches past the post with Halliday struggling to get across.

After the poor start to the season, the Foxes’ now look to be in a false position in the league and manager Frankie Sawyer will be able to concentrate on climbing the table.
