In front of a healthy crowd, a goal in each half was enough for Chislehurst Glebe to inflict AFC Greenwich Borough’s first Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division defeat.

Things started badly for Greenwich when Tom Jones injured himself in the pre-match warm up and had to be replaced in the starting line-up by sixteen year old Austin Tanner. 

Harry Revill had the first chance when sent through one v one but Nathan Edwards was out quickly to block. Then, at the other end, Ben Oladapo went round Borough goalkeeper Peter Balogun only to run out of room and poke it wide. Luke Medley was next to have an opportunity when he shot wide of Balogun’s near post after intercepting s sloppy back pass.

Two more Greenwich chances went wide, first when Wilfred Evans headed a deep Olu Obilana corner past the post, then when Stefan Payne missed the target from fifteen yards. Brandon Barrance put a Foxes free kick well over before Payne hit another effort from the edge of the area that flew straight into the hands of Edwards.

Tanner shot wide for the Borough before the hosts went ahead. Medley went on a strong run down the inside right channel before firing into the bottom corner.

Early in the second period Medley went on another powerful run, however, Balogun was able to save before Obilana tried an effort with the outside of his boot that Edwards held comfortably. Barrance sent Jaden Coleman through and Balogun made a great save then Edwards made an even better one to deny Joshua Shonibare one handed after he had been sent clear by Obilana.

Shonibare missed a great chance to level when Obilana took a short corner to Bradley Ryan, got it back and drove it into the box only for the Borough player to knock it over from close range. Shonibare tried his luck from the edge of the area but shot straight at Edwards before the Foxes doubled their lead midway through the second period.

Another free kick was struck by Barrance and this time it appeared to go through the defensive wall. Balogun’s desperate effort to save it was pushed against the post and into the net.

Four minutes later, the visitors’ evening went from bad to worse when Obilana’s tackle left Thibault Abie in a heap and the referee, who was perfectly placed, deemed it serious foul play and brandished his red card.

Tom Hever worked his way into a scoring opportunity and Balogun made another save then, at the other end, Edwards kept out a long range shot from Arthur Penney after struggling to hold it at first. Hever then found substitute Nathan Palmer whose fierce effort flew inches past the angle of post and bar. 

There were no further chances and the Foxes were soon able to celebrate their third win of the campaign.
