Cheshunt v Welling United preview

Tuesday evening football greets Welling United as they travel to Cheshunt in a Vanarama National League South fixture.

Both teams drew at home on Saturday. Welling United looked as though they were going to record a rare victory against Dartford when they were twice ahead but, eventually they had to settle for a draw.

George Alexander, on loan from Bromley, marked his debut by putting the Wings ahead but Charlie Sheringham levelled.

Ade Azeez put Welling back in front and a rare victory against the Darts looked on the cards until Malachi Napa levelled with seven minutes remaining. Myles Roberts then had to make a vital late save for the second week running to ensure Welling kept what they had.

There were no goals in Cheshunt’s game with Hemel Hempstead Town. Goal chances were very rare in the first half, but the hosts had the better of the second period and kept Tudors’ goalkeeper Craig King busy. However, they were unable to find a winner and also survived a late scare.

Despite not winning, the point was enough to take them out of the bottom four, and to extend their unbeaten run to three matches, all of which were draws. Five of their seven victories this season have been on home soil although they have also lost fifty percent of their sixteen defeats in front of their own supporters.

When the two teams met at Park View Road on a warm August evening, the Wings won by the odd goal in three. All of the goals were scored in the first period. Tyrique Hyde and Ade Azeez put the Wings two up before Rowan Liburd scored in first half stoppage time. Once Joe Re had been sent off in the second half, the Ambers did not present a further threat.

Although Liburd has now moved on from Cheshunt, Welling will be up against former Wings Lewis Hobbs, Emmanuel Maja and Zack Newton, all of whom will be keen to put on a good performance against their former club.
