Chelmsford City v Welling United preview

Two Consecutive postponements have delayed Welling United’s hopes of bouncing back from back to back Vanarama National League South defeats.

Their three-two loss at Worthing was followed up by a four-two reverse at home to Dulwich Hamlet. They have since had a midweek game at Chippenham Town and a home match against Hemel Hempstead Town called off due to frozen pitches.

On Saturday, they will travel to Chelmsford City in the hope of returning to action following their two week break. Welling manager Warren Feeney will be in no doubt about the task in Essex as the Clarets are fourth in the league table.

Furthermore, their home record is good with eight wins and two draws out of their thirteen games on their own pitch.

Last Saturday, they travelled to Weymouth and returned with another three points under their belts.

Reece Grant put them ahead just before the half hour mark but they went in at the break level after Bradley Ash scored six minutes earlier. They left it late before grabbing the winner through Simeon Jackson with two minutes remaining.

When the two teams met earlier this season at Park View Road, Welling’s two match winning run came to an end. The scores were level until midway through the second half when Jackson put the visitors ahead. He scored again nine minutes before time.

Although Taylor Maloney scored a spectacular goal for Welling four minutes later, they were unable to find an equaliser.

Stefan Payne should be available for selection following the completion of his two-game suspension and Feeney will also hope that goalkeeper Myles Roberts is fit to come back in. The Welling manager has also been boosted by the news that Aaron Powell’s loan from Peterborough United has been extended for another month.

Last season’s encounter at the Melbourne Ground ended goal-less. The closest that either team came to scoring was when Welling full-back Maxwell Statham unleashed a fierce drive that rattled the crossbar.
