Chelmsford City v Welling United – Preview

Welling United are back on the road this weekend as they travel across the Dartford Crossing to the county town of Essex, as they take on Chelmsford City.

Steve King and his players will be looking to build on the momentum that their three-two win over Oxford City at Park View Road gave them last weekend.

Speaking after that game, King said: “If I’m honest, we have played better and lost. We didn’t play that well today but to score three goals at home with a 90th minute winner, you’re over the moon obviously.

“I thought Oxford played really well. I thought we dominated most of the first half. They were better than us in the second half, got in multiple times and missed with some poor chances.

“They got a penalty which wasn’t a penalty it was outside the box, the linesman should never have given it but they’ve missed that, it hit the cross bar which is a bit of lady luck for us. We kept going and going and we got the winner at the end, but I thought we [wasn’t] the best today.

“They’ve probably created the most chances in this division against us to be honest they have caused us a lot of problems. But playing bad and getting three points and scoring three goals is not bad at all.

“Craig’s block was a certain goal going in. They did ok, it wasn’t their finest hour along with the team’s finest hour but we kept going and going and sometimes you get a little bit of luck as in we scored in the [90th ] minute it was a good finish but we can play a lot better.

“Rod’s teams are always physically tough to play against and they are good at home. We go back a long way as managers and I think it will be a proper game.”

Chelmsford City currently sit ninth in the Vanarama National League South table, five places below Welling United, and come into the game on the back of a 1-0 defeat at home to Slough Town.
