Chelmsford City 3-1 Welling United

Once again, Welling United disappointed their travelling fans with a poor away day performance.

Easter Monday public transport meant that those not going by road took three hours or more to get to Chelmsford and were not rewarded with much of a performance.

Despite going in at half time one up, five minutes of mayhem at the start of the second period ensured that Alex Dyer was not going to enjoy an unbeaten spell in his six matches in charge.

Most of the first half was spent on the back foot with Chris Dickson and Louie Theophanous taking it in turn to miss chances.

Theophanous was first with a turn on the spin that was saved by Chris Lewington then Dickson was off target with a weak effort.

Dickson sent a curler wide before Theophanous netted only to have it chalked out for offside.

Alex Cathline shot well off target for Welling before Dickson again missed for the Clarets.

After 24 minutes the deadlock was broken when Rickie Hayles, in for the injured Ben Martin, rose to head home from Sam Hatton’s corner.

Lewington saved from Theophanous before Dickson collected a long punt forward from Chris Bush before spinning and firing over.

Whatever was in Welling’s half time cup of tea did not do them much good as within five minutes the game had been turned on its head.

First, Lewington struck a clearance directly at Dickson who took full advantage by smashing the rebound home.

Then Michael Spillane headed home a Robbie Wilmott corner.

It almost went from bad to worse when Dickson saw his shot come back off the post.

A double substitution and formation change slowed down the Chelmsford attacks but Welling created little.

Two minutes remained when Chelmsford made it three when Shaun Jeffers curled home from the edge of the area..
