Chelmsford Chieftains 8-3 Invicta Dynamos

Goals from Callum Fowler, Adam Copland and Justin Noble were not enough to prevent the Invicta Dynamos slipping to a fourth consecutive road defeat as the Chelmsford Chieftains proved too strong on their own ice and powered to an 8-3 victory in the Southeast Trophy.

Buoyed by their comeback win on home ice against Streatham the night before, the Dynamos held their own in the opening period despite the absence of captain Andy Smith and forwards Grant Baxter and Harrison Lillis. As they went on the attack, the visitors tested shot stopper Ben Clements 15 times whilst David Wride stood firm against 12 attempts on his goal. Neither side were able to break the deadlock in the first and so the teams returned to the dressing rooms with the score at 0-0.

In the second period the tie then took a downturn for the Dynamos who lost defenceman Tim Smith to a match penalty for butt ending within 50 seconds of the restart. The Chieftains were unable to take advantage of the powerplay but eventually got the breakthrough five minutes in when Gary Clarke converted for the first of the night. Midway through, a two minute spell in which Chelmsford netted three then killed the tie despite Callum Fowler notching a late answer for the visitors. James Ayling, Darren Brown and Ross Brears were all on target for the hosts before Fowler struck to keep the Dynamos just about in the hunt with the score at 4-1.

If the away side did harbour any hopes of a second comeback in two days, their ambitions were quickly dashed in the last as Chelmsford grabbed two more in the opening five minutes to make it 6-1. ‘Import’ Julius Sinkovic joined the growing list of scorers for the home side before Ross Brears claimed his second and last of the evening shortly after. A long drive by Adam Copland cut that deficit to 6-2 on the powerplay but James Ayling and uncompromising blue liner Tibor Schneider replied for Chelmsford to take their teams tally to eight. The vast lead meant that Justin Noble’s powerplay strike late on was no more than a consolation for the Dynamos who were outshot by 20 to 13.

So it was ultimately an emphatic defeat at the Riverside for the Dynamos who will take consolation from the fact that their the result in the Southeast Trophy is of little importance at this late stage of the competition. Nevertheless Head Coach Kevin Parrish will want his team to sort their road form if they are to challenge in any tournaments during 2012/13. Man of the match honours went to Justin Noble of the Dynamos for his one goal and one assist on the night.
