Chatham Town vs Welling United – Preview

Two teams with opposing short term ambitions meet when Chatham Town host Welling United in the Isthmian League Premier.

While the home team are targetting the play-offs at a minimum, and potential promotion to the National League South, the Wings are ensnared in a relegation dogfight. The two teams both drew last time out to end runs of losses.

Last week’s draw at Cray Wanderers ended Chatham’s spell of four consecutive league and cup defeats, all of which were at home. Billericay Town and Brentwood Town both went back to Essex with one-nil wins under their belts before Chichester City beat the Chats three-two.

At Cray, Nile Ranger put Chatham ahead with just twelve minutes remaining, however, they conceded a late penalty which Alex Hernandez converted and the two teams had to settle on a point apiece. That left the visitors in the final position in the play-off zone, but still well placed as they have games in hand.

Meanwhile, Welling hosted St Albans City and were indebted to goalkeeper Mackenzie Foley who pushed an early penalty round the post and made a couple of other good saves. As a result, the Wings recorded their first league draw of the season, and just their second league clean sheet. That was Welling’s third game without scoring but ended their three match losing streak.

However, the point didn’t stop the Wings from dropping to bottom place, and a result in midweek means that they are now seven points adrift of safety.

Back in November, the two teams met at Park View Road and Chatham secured the three points in a one-nil victory. Tope Fadahunsi scored the only goal six minutes after the half time break.

Both Kent FA affiliated clubs will be looking to end their no wins sequence of results in an encounter when every point matters.
