Chatham Town 4-0 Burgess Hill Town
Chatham Town 4-0 Burgess Hill Town

A week is a long time in football as last week Chatham lost to St Albans with a poor performance then midweek came away with a great draw at Chichester and then today take three points against an inform Burgess Hill Town.

Today’s performance was one that grew as the game went on and, in the end, fully deserved this win which keeps them in the play-off places and now they can concentrate on Plymouth Parkway in the FA Trophy next Saturday.

Chatham started the game the quickest and in the fifth minute could have taken the lead when Ollie Evans on the right wing saw his cross into the area find Kian Moynes eight yards out, but he headed over the bar. In the tenth minute disaster struck for Burgess Hill as Martyn Box chasing a ball in the area fell down right by the advertising boards and looked in considerable pain (he was substituted and we found out that it was his ACL).

In the twenty eighth minute Chatham nearly scored when Kofi Anokye Boadi put Matt MaCarthur into the area and his shot from eight yards was tipped over the bar by Roco Rees for a corner. Three minutes later Burgess Hill were awarded a penalty when a corner to the back post was handled by Chaynie Burgin, up stepped Chris Whelpdale and he hit it down to the left, but Nathan Harvey went the right way and tipped it onto the post.

In the 43rd minute Chatham took the lead when a scramble in the box saw a snapshot go goal wards and Rees could only partially save it and Boadi was quick enough to get to it and shoot into the net. Half time arrived and both sides would have different team talks after that goal.

The second half saw Chatham take control of the game as in the 51st minute MaCarthur on the left saw his shot saved by Rees then five minutes later they doubled their lead when a cross to the back came back to Sam Sene-Richardson who laid the ball into the path of Evans who from eighteen yards shot in.

In the 66th minute one of the Chatham coaches was sent off for kicking the ball away twice. In the 79th minute Sene-Richardson on the left cut inside and from eighteen yards saw his shot saved. In the 89th minute Chatham scored their third when a long ball forward saw Ben Allen chase it down and he blocked the clearance and then into the area and shot into an empty net.

In the seventh minute of added on time Chatham got their fourth when Allen chasing a ball through the middle saw Rees come out and take Allen out (nobody really saw this but the Assistant saw it and a penalty was given and Rees was sent off, up stepped Allen who shot into the bottom left hand corner.
