Charlton Athletic v Wycombe Wanderers preview

On Thursday evening Charlton Athletic host Wycombe Wanderers in a Sky Bet League One play-off eliminator second leg.

They met at Wycombe for the first leg on Sunday, and drew nil-nil in a tough match with few chances. Addicks manager Nathan Jones will know that the job is far from done, and he will expect the second leg to be equally tense.

In their two league encounters during the season, Charlton completed the double over Wycombe with their most recent meeting being at Adams Park on Easter Monday. Goals by Lloyd Jones and Luke Berry in the first half were followed by two more in the second period, netted by Matt Godden and Karoy Anderson.

Their meeting at the Valley, back in December, was a tighter affair. There were no goals in the first half but a brace in four minutes by Myles Leaburn, early in the second period, put Charlton in command. Richard Kone pulled one back with six minutes remaining, but the hosts held out to win all three points.

Despite having won both of those games, Charlton only finished one point above Wycombe, and that was as a result of the Wanderers losing their last three matches. Charlton’s home form of fifteen wins, six draws and two defeats was only bettered by the clubs finishing in the top three. However, Wycombe’s record on the road was second behind champions Birmingham City. They won twelve, drew six and lost five.

Another tough match is likely and the noisy Charlton supporters will hope to give their team the edge, and cheer them on to the decider at Wembley Stadium.
