Brave, brave Charlton scored a dramatic 98th minute winner to defeat Hull at The Valley on Saturday.

Just when it looked as though victory had been snatched from them, after the Tigers equalised in the 90th minute, Johann Gudmundsson scored to give the Addicks their just desserts.

Robbed of Chris Solly, Tony Watt and Reza Ghoochannejhad through injurues picked up at Nottingham on Tuesday, Guy Luzon lost Johnnie Jackson to a training ground injury on Friday.

He was to lose Cristian Ceballos and El-Hadji Ba to a leg injury and cramp respectively during the course of the game. Neither player is likely to be side lined for long though. Patrick Bauer dislocated a finger, which was popped back in on the pitch by physio, Erol Umut. The excruciating pain the German had to endure seemed to be felt on the terraces too.

The injuries meant Luzon had to shuffle his pack. Jordan Cousins switched to right-back, and Ba returned to partner Ahmed Kashi as the holding duo in midfield, with Ceballos on the the right, Gudmundsson in the middle, just behind Simon Makienok, and Zakarya Bergdich on the left of the advanced midfield trio.

Luzon reverted to the more familiar 4-4-2 shape following Ceballos’24th minute departure. Gudmundsson went to the right with Karlan Ahearne-Grant coming on to partner Makienok.

The team has a real togetherness and never-say-die attitude these fays. When Hull scored their late leveller, skipper Alou Diarra, drove his team forward by example. Makienok put in his usual shift in defence and midfield, as well as performing his duties at the front. Kashi was the perfect anchor in front of the back four.

Charlton dominated proceedings for most of the match but had to wait until seven minutes after the break before taking the lead.

Gudmundsson cut in from the right and chipped up a right-footed cross for Makienok to head home. Gudmundsson should have doubled the Addicks’ lead two minutes later, when a defensive slip left him clear with only Allan McGregor to beat, but the Icelander fired his shot straight at the keeper.

There was a bizarre moment before the game headed for its stunning finale, when Bergdich was booked as he left the field, for taking too long to get exit the game.

In the last minute of normal time, Isaac Hayden hit the outside of the post from the edge of the area, Hull recycled the ball to Hayden again, this time his fierce shot was spilled by Nick Pope and Abel Hernandez was on hand to bundle the ball home.

It was the Tigers who were in the ascendency now and their was a sense of foreboding for the fans when the fourth official’s board indicated that there would be eight minutes of added on time.

Luzon’s team looked out on their feet but their spirit got them through. In the last of those eight minutes, Kashi crossed deep into the box, Makienok rose to nod it into the danger area.

Gudmundsson reacted quickest and stooped to head the ball past McGregor. Cue mass celebrations on the field and inthe stands.

Luzon joined in with his players celebrations, which did not impress referee, Tim Robinson, who sent the Charlton boss to the stands, to complete an afternoon of high drama.

A fabulous afternoon’s entertainment that will long stay in the memory. The astonishing victory saw the Addicks move up to third in the table.

The one dark cloud is the number of players ruled out with injury at the moment. Luzon will have to consider whether he needs to bring reinforcements in.
