Charlton Athletic 2-0 Queens Park Rangers
The introduction of Tony Watt for the ineffective Karlan Ahearne-Grant at half-time turned the game decisively in Charlton’s favour.
Second-half strikes from Watt, and a first senior goal from Morgan Fox, were enough to take the Addicks to second place in the embryonic league table.
The Valley was unusually busy on Saturday morning as those with season ticket problems queued for tickets. Everything seemed to pass off without major incident, albeit there were lengthy mid-morning queues.
Ahearne-Grant for Watt was the only real surprise in Guy Luzon’s line-up on a stifling afternoon.
Queens Park Rangers included former Addick, Paul Konchesky, and a disinterested looking, C‎harlie Austin, in their line-up.
It was the visitors from West London who started the brighter and they had a flurry of early corners.
Nick Pope was the busier of the two keepers and had to fly to his left to turn one effort from TjarronCherry round the post, but Johann Gudmundsson tested Robert Green from long range for the hosts.
Pope was called into action just after the break to tip a Matty Phillips effort over the bar.
Seven minutes after the restart‎, Charlton went ahead. Simon Makienok let a El-Hadji Ba pass run to Watt. The Scotsman cut back onto his right foot to fire a shot past Robert Green.
The A‎ddicks doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute. Watt laid the ball off to Fox on the left hand corner of the box, and the left-back thundered a shot past Green and into the far corner.
Once in front, Luzon’s team rarely looked troubled.
All the new boys had decent debuts with Ahmed Kashi being the pick.
Luzon will be pleased withhis teams encouraging start.
