Charlton Athletic 1-0 Wycombe Wanderers

Having secured a draw in the first leg away to Wycombe Wanderers, Charlton Athletic were considered to be marginal favourites in their Sky Bet League One play-off eliminator, but it took a late Matty Godden goal to prove the bookies right.

Two early corners for Wycombe, who started the more lively, came to nothing before the hosts began to probe. A long range effort by Greg Docherty tested Wycombe goalkeeper Franco Ravizzoli but he got down to make the save.

Thierry Small and Godden then combined well for the latter to slant a low diagonal pass across the face of goal, but just out of the reach of Tyreece Campbell.

Tension appeared to get the better of both teams after that as the match became disjointed before the Addicks had a great chance to break the deadlock seven minutes before half time. Godden chipped over a delightful cross to an unmarked Lloyd Jones but he got his range all wrong and headed well wide.

Although the Addicks enjoyed the better of the territorial advantage, they couldn’t fashion another chance and a largely uneventful first half drew to a close.

Immediately after the break, a long Charlton throw in by Josh Edwards found its way to Alex Gilbert and his first time shot was deflected wide for a corner. Richard Kone then had an opportunity for the Choirboys when he burst down the inside left channel before thrashing his shot into the side netting after Macauley Gillesphey forced him a little wider than he would have wished.

Edwards played a delightful pass inside the full back to put Campbell in behind and he picked out Docherty whose shot was blocked by Sonny Bradley. Small then cut in from the right and hit a shot inches past the far post before Wycombe had a great chance.

Substitute Fred Onyedimna burst away and squared to Garath McCleary and his goal-bound shot was blocked by Kayne Ramsay. It came back out to Xavier Simons and Ramsay raced out to charge down his shot.

Nine minutes remained when Charlton scored the crucial goal. Gillesphey delivered a deep free kick that found its way through to Jones. He poked it forward and when Ravizzoli was unable to hold onto it, Godden was first to the rebound to bundle it home.

Conor Coventry had a chance to add a second with a late free kick but Ravizzoli saved comfortably. That proved not to matter as the Addicks saw out the four minutes of stoppage time without further alarm to set up the decider against Leyton Orient at Wembley Stadium.
