Charlton Ath v West Ham Utd preview

Saturday’s clash with West Ham at The Valley will see Guy Luzon adopt a different approach from to the one he has used in the previous pre-season games.

Thus far, Luzon has more-or-less fielded a completely different team in each half of the matches. Against the Hammers, Luzon intends to give an hour or more to those he has pencilled in for the season opener with Queens Park Rangers.

Charlton fans will be hoping to get their first glimpse of this week’s new arrivals, Ahmed Kashi, Cristian Ceballo and Zakaraya Bergdich.

Kashi is a midfield anchor, Ceballo is an attacking midfielder-cum-striker, while Bergdich can play wide left or left-back, and is lightning quick.

Stephen Henderson is definitely ruled out with the shoulder injury he picked up before the Dulwich Hamlet game last Saturday.

Rhoys Wiggins, Jordan Cousins, Igor Vetokele and Johnnie Jackson could appear after missing the Dagenham game on Wednesday. Wiggins is the major doubt, having picked up an ankle injury at Dulwich.

Wiggins is the subject of interest from Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich, and may not be risked in any event.

Luzon appears to be viewing Nick Pope as Henderson’s deputy, ahead of Marko Dmitrovich. Whoever starts against West Ham will be in poll position to deputise for Henderson when the season starts.

Chris Solly, Patrick Bauer, Alou Diarra and Morgan Fox are the likely back line. Luzon has plenty of options in midfield and may pair Simon Makienok and Tony Watt at the front.

The Hammers had a tough Europa League qualifying game in Malta on Thursday, so it is difficult to assess what sort of team they will put out. But whatever their line-up, Slavan Bilic’s side will give the Addicks a thorough work out.
