Charlton took two points from the Checkatrade Trophy match at The Valley on Tuesday evening.Charlton Athletic

A turgid first half was followed by a much brighter second period, though clear cut chances were at a premium.
The Saints were awarded a penalty midway through the first half when Jake Hesketh was bundled over by Andrew Crofts, but Harrison Reed fired his spot-kick wide of Dillon Phillips’ right hand post.
New signing, Adam Chicksen, made his Valley bow in the second period.
The Addicks won the penalty shoot-out 5-4 to take a bonus point from the game.
The penalties were taken at the Covered End, and after Chris Solly had drilled the first spot-kick home, Phillips pulled off a terrific save to foil Jack Stehens and give Charlton an early advantage.
Josh Umerah converted, Kevin Foley hit the bar, then Brandan Hanlan and Karlan Ahearne-Grant scored for the Addicks, with Hesketh, Sam McQueen, Alfie Jones and Thomas O’Connor all netting for Southampton.
Ezri Konsa scored the first sudden death penalty, but Saints’ keeper, Alex McCarthy, hit the bar with his kick, to give Charlton a 5-4 win.

‎Addicks fans may be biting their finger nails right up to Wednesday’s 11.00pm transfer window deadline.
Russell Slade is trying to bring in Norwich midfielder Louis Thompson – who appeared for the Canaries’ ‎in their thumping of Peterborough on Tuesday – and a winger.
There is still work to be done on both deals, and Slade may have to consider other options if the negotiations drag on for too long.
On a brighter note, teenage prodigy Ademola Lookman looks set to stay at The Valley, and Morgan Fox – the subject of transfer speculation in some quarters – will also be staying put.
