At the recent Charlton Athletic v Welling United presentations of the proceeds of the Welling United Beer Festivals to the selected charities were conducted on the pitch.

These were made by Mark Doig, Patsy Neal and Mark Yarrow of the festival committee. Another member of the committee, Gordon Runacre provided the following short descriptions of the beneficiaries:

Chartwell Cancer Trust Tiger Ward (at Queen Elizabeth Hospital), a registered charity which supports Tiger Ward where treatment is provided  for up to 80 children.

CCT Tiger Ward have funded a new kitchen which has proved a lifeline for many parents of children requiring 24 hour care. They have also provided funding for much needed, medical equipment, bespoke recliner medical chairs, gaming chairs, toys, and for fun times, parties and happy memories. They also fund a full time Health Care Assistant.

Currently funds are being raised for an interactive wall projector and Dinamap machines. These essential pieces of medical equipment check oxygen and blood pressure several times a day.

Mencap (Bexley), a registered charity whose purpose is to support people with learning difficulties and their carers.

The services provided include Respect in Bexley self advocacy group, Carers United a support group for parents and carers, and Twos Company a befriending service, a health appointments service and Social clubs.

Carer’s Support (Bexley), a registered charity whose purpose is to provide information, support and breaks for carers.

The services offered include  a free breaks service whereby carers can have up to 28 days a year respite with the cared for person being looked after by volunteers, Carer support group meetings, Coffee mornings, and memory support groups.

Tristan Lewis, Welling United Director of Football, greeted the representatives and gave out souvenirs before the match.

Afterwards, player manager Jamie Coyle, player coach Jack Parkinson, plus players Olumide Durojaiye and Ben Jefford, spoke to some of the young patients, signing their programmes and match tickets and posing for photographs.
