Maidstone United 0-0 Eastbourne Borough

Maidstone & Eastbourne played out a bore draw on Tuesday night.

Both sides huffed & puffed but with no creativity the scoreline never looked like being troubled.

Maidstone’s recent bad record at home continues as they seem to find it hard to win whilst Eastbourne were robust & defended well with Tom Hadler ex-Gillingham keeper not having to make a save.

The game started quickly for Maidstone and as early as the first minute Noah Chesmain picked up a clearance on the edge of the area but his first time shot went wide

Minutes later Sam Corne saw his curling effort from 20 yards out go just past the post.

The game went into slumber as both teams continually gave the ball away.

Another half chance came Maidstone’s way when Clovis Kamdjo on the right crossed into the area where Dan Wishart rose but his header went over the bar.

Eastbourne had to wait until the 28th minute for their first chance when Greg Luer on the right wing crossed to the back post but Kristian Campbell headed just wide of the post.

The rest of the half, however, played out to little or no incident with little to entertain the crowd.

The second half could have been better if Eastbourne had scored in the 49th minute. James Ferry ran from the halfway line into the area but from 10 yards his shot under no pressure went past the post.

The game again went into a lull until the midway through the half when a cross into the area found Gavin Hoyte at the back post but his goal bound shot was blocked for a corner.

Maidstone had another half chance nine minutes from time when a corner to the back post was headed back into the 6 yard box by Ryan Johnson & Wishart under pressure shot wide.

The final chance of the game arrived in injury time when Charlie Walker saw his free kick from 25 yards pushed away by Jake Cole.

In reality neither side deserved anything more than a point a piece and it is a result that maintains both sides middling start to the new season.

Charlton 0-0 Forest Green Rovers (3-5 penalties)

Charlton went out of the Carabao Cup at The Valley on Tuesday evening. After a 0-0 draw, the Addicks were eliminated 5-3 on penalties by Forest Green Rovers. The game was poor entertainment for the sparse Valley crowd.

Lee Bowyer made eleven changes to the team that started against Stoke on Saturday.

Sam Field made his debut and showed his class, he never gave the ball away once, and he made some terrific tackles too.

Naby S‎arr came desperately close to opening the scoring just before the half-hour mark, but keeper, Joe Wollacott, blocked the shot with his face.

The best chance of the game fell Charlton’s way‎ midway through the second-half when Naby Sarr – skipper for the night – was brought down in the area.

Unfortunately for the Addicks, Jake Forster-Caskey’s penalty was poor, and Joe Wollacott was able to make a comfortable save.

The penalty shoot-out was staged in front of the small band of travelling supporters in the‎ Jimmy Seed Stand.

Rovers went first and converted all five of their spot-kicks, but after Macauley Bonne and Naby Sarr had netted, Albie Morgan saw his effort saved. Though Deji Oshilaja coolly slotted home the fourth penalty, Rovers scored their fifth and Charlton were out.

In time honoured tradition, the Addicks can now concentrate on the league…..well, until January at least.

Billericay Town vs Welling United – Preview

Following a hard earned but deserved draw at Havant and Waterlooville and a well merited victory over Maidstone United, Welling United crashed at home to Bath City on Saturday and now have a difficult trip to Billericay Town on Tuesday.

It was a tough afternoon for the Wings on Saturday as they crashed three nil at home to Bath. Missing holding midfielder Connor Dymond, they struggled to contain the Romans and were three down by half-time. They introduced Dquame Copeland at the interval and were a little better after the break but by then the damage was done.

One win, one draw and one defeat isn’t a disaster after three tough games for a new management and new squad but the manner of defeat was disappointing prompting Mark Goldberg to say “Those first forty-five minutes were embarrassing and I apologise to the fans for that but at the end of the day it’s a long long way to go and after ten games we’ll know where we are.”

Two players returning from injury in the second half provided some positives. Joshua Oyinsan was lively up front and Gavin McCallum looked energetic despite having missed all of pre-season. Those two, along with Copeland, provide some alternatives for when Goldberg selects his starting line up at Billericay.

Furthermore, Anthony Cook and Reece Prestedge will also be available having missed the first three games through suspension. That gives Goldberg a decision to make should Dymond not be ready to return. “It’s a difficult one now because Dquame has come in and done a job so he’s got to be thought of as a possible starter.” he said.

Hosts Billericay fell to a surprise two-nil defeat at Chippenham Town on Saturday to end their one hundred percent start. However, last season, despite Welling finishing the season in third place, well ahead of the Blues, Billericay recorded the double over the Wings. The home defeat was early in the season and the defeat in Essex was in January.

In that game, the first half was goal-less but Billericay went ahead three minutes after the break through Kieran Cadogan’s low drive. Shortly after, Welling conceded again and the game was over as a contest. The goal-scorer of the second was Adam Coombes who is now back at Welling.

Both teams will be looking for a quick bounce back following their disappointments on Saturday so it should be an enthralling encounter.
