Kent’s Shane Byrne is aiming to secure four, five or even six British Superbike titles after making history at the weekend.Shane Byrne20

Byrne became the most successful British Superbike rider in history last weekend with a double victory at Thruxton.

Races wins 43 and 44 came on a rain effected weekend, to make sure he is now the most successful rider in terms of race wins.

Speaking exclusively about the weekend, and the race wins to Kent Sports News, he said: “After the first races at Brands Hatch we knew that we were in pretty good shape.

“Looking back at Thruxton now it is one of my favourite tracks in the UK, with the Kawasaki being quite fast we were in quite a good place. We knew that we had some work to do on the bike coming out of Brands.

“Unfortunately Thruxton as was Brands Hatch actually was hampered a little bit by the weather, I think it is fair to say that everyone was a bit behind where they should have been. I knew we would be strong but I was really pleased to do the double.”

The safety car was out on a number of occasions at Thruxton which means it is not only a test of speed but concentration as well, with the stop start nature of how the races goes.

Shakey added: “The second race was incredibly frustrating, Thruxton is a really difficult place to break from the pack, and if you can do that you can concentrate on your own lines and run your own race.

“It seemed that every time I made a break, which in itself is an absolute mission around there that the safety car came out which is quite frustrating. Fortunately we had made some changes to the bike between the two races, and I was able to get straight back to a really good lap time when the safety car went in.

“When the red flag came out in race two I thought I do not believe this, now we are going to have to have a restart. I rushed back to the pits as quick as I could, because I knew there was more work to be done on the bike.

“We had all the data from the race that got stopped and were in a good position, but when I got back to the pits they waves me through to the podium area which I thought was a bit bizarre, and they had declared it a race so I will take that.”Shane Byrne21

In race one Shakey dived up the inside of the last chicane to make a move stick on Josh Brookes, almost like he had done at Brands Hatch just a week before, but was it pre-planned Shane revealed all.

“To be honest with you one of the biggest problems in race one was that we had a problem with one of the front break discs. The bike had a lot of vibration and not a lot of stopping power, and it was like a glazed pad sensation in terms of you get the pads to warm to quickly and they don’t have the right performance.

“It was weird because it happened a lap or two into the race, and I thought it can’t be glazed pads because we weren’t too far in. Some basically I had a lot of vibration under braking and couldn’t stop as I needed too.

“A lot of people have spoken about the move on Josh at the end of the race there to take the win, saying that it was really good. To be perfectly honest with you though it has nothing to do with out braking him I just couldn’t stop any quicker if I tried. Maybe we should mess up the brakes a bit more often as it seemed to work.

“They were a pair of good races and I really enjoyed them as I like riding that track and I was happy to win them.”Shane Byrne19

It was a bit of an anti-climax to become the most successful BSB race winner ever under red flag conditions in what looked set to be an epic battle to the end.

Shakey however was just happy to get the win he said: “I watched the races on TV last night and you look at however many of the top 14 were covered by 14 seconds, and the reality is that two or three laps before hand there was a safety car out and we were all quite close.

“If you had looked at the gaps after a full 20 lap race, 14 seconds might have covered the top four or five but that might have been about it. You always try to win a race as easy as possible and sometimes you just take a win by 1,000th of a second and that is enough.

“When race wins come sometimes they are easy and sometimes they are not and that one wasn’t I would say was an anti-climax, nobody can take away that we won the race. Would I have liked it to have been a stronger battle and a 20 lapper yeah for sure.”

Now that Shane Byrne has made history becoming the man in BSB with the most race wins ever, how does he feel about it?

He added: “Obviously it is a nice accolade but it is one that can be changed within two races again because it has taken me this time to overtake Kiyo. He is in the Championship this year so I am not going to be resting on any laurels that’s for sure.

“I want to make that number that someone else has to win is much higher than it is now so that hopefully the record stands for a little while. Like I said two race wins and Kiyo equals me so it isn’t too big a deal yet.

“If we get to the point where we have won another six, eight, ten races by the end of the year and Kiyo doesn’t win another one then obviously the record will be there for hopefully a year or so. I certainly want to keep pushing and I want to try and win a fourth title and I want to try and win a fifth or a sixth one as well. I want to try and set the bar really high and when I have done what I set out to achieve and not enjoying doing it anymore, I will hang up the leathers and that will be that.”

Of the 44 races wins to date we asked Shane whether there were one or two races that stood out for him as the ones he enjoyed the most.

He said: “It is a really difficult question because obviously I will never forget the first BSB win which was at Donington in 2002 on the Ducati, which was pretty special.

“There have been lots, the final race last year was special. A wins a win and no matter how special or important it was to me it is only a statistic to everybody else. The first one stands out, Donington last year stands out. Mallory Park in 2007 was quite a good race as we were on a privateer bike and we won.

“I tell you one that does stand out is Mallory Park in 2008 when I got wedged up against the wall in the middle of the hairpin and stopped dead for a second. I had to shimmy myself off the wall to get going again and I still came through and won that one.”
