Burton Albion 2-3 Gillingham

There were plenty of goals at the Pirelli Stadium this afternoon, as the Gills edged a five goal thriller with a late strike from Josh Rees sealing the points for the away side.

The first half saw the Gills take their chances with Elliott List giving the Gills the lead before Callum Reilly doubled the lead on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot.

Steve Lovell made one change to the side that beat Cardiff City in the FA Cup with Regan Charles-Cook replaced the injured Tom Eaves in the starting line-up.

List gave the Gills the lead in the 23rd minute, and it was a great solo effort, as he picked the ball up on the halfway line and took on the Brwewers defence single handed before slotting past Bradley Collins.

Then with the half time whistle approaching a Luke O’Neill free-kick was adjudged to have been handled by a Burton player in the wall, the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Reilly stepped up and dispatched the ball into the back of the net, having sent the keeper the wrong way.

Burton had their chances in the first half and would have been wondering how they had gone in two-nil down at the break, they would however get back into the game in the second half.

It didn’t take long for the home side to get back into the game after half time, in the 51st minute the Gills didn’t deal with a corner into the box, with the ball landing at the feet of Scott Fraser. He showed good footwork before beating a couple of Gills defenders and slotting the ball into the far corner off the post.

The scores were level ten minutes later though, as the home side broke forward, Fraser once again found himself with time in the box. He took a touch and buried his effort into the top corner leaving Tomas Holy with no chance.

With the clock clicking round to the 90 minute mark, the Gills scored the winner courtesy of substitute Rees with his first goal for the club. Rees started the move down the left as he found fellow substitute Brandon Hanlon, he then cut the ball back to List. He then fed the ball to Rees, who found the top corner and give the Gills their 400th away victory.
