Bromley v Southend United preview

Bromley start 2023 with a National League home game against Southend Utd at Hayes Lane on New Year’s Day.

The Ravens go into the game having beaten Southend 1-0 at Roots Hall on Boxing Day courtesy of a superb first half strike from Louis Dennis, a win that took them back up to eighth in the table with 33 points from 22 league matches, just outside the play off places on goal difference.

The performance answered some of the criticism following the FA Trophy exit at Bath City the previous week, with manager Andy Woodman changing the shape of the team to a back four and giving Millwall loanee left back Besart Topalloj his debut, with Academy product Kellen Fisher playing at right back.

Omar Sowunmi is available again for selection after suspension, which may see Woodman revert back to 3-4-2 for the home game.

The club announced the departure of defender Chris Bush this week and with Reece Hannam injured the squad is very light at the moment, although keeper Reice Charles-Cook could be on his way back from a long lay off soon.

Southend’s defeat to Bromley on the 26th sees them sitting in sixth place with 34 points from 23 league games, The Shrimpers have had an impressive first half of the season, especially given the financial problems off the field.

Manager Kevin Maher has said his squad remains ‘solid’ despite the off field issues as they look to maintain a play off challenge.

When the sides met at Hayes Lane last season the game ended 1-1 with Michael Cheek on target for The Ravens just after the hour mark and Matthew Dennis equalising for Southend two minutes later.

This game looks set to be equally as tight with both sides having similar records to this point as they look to start 2023 with a win and to keep in touch with the top seven.

Match Tickets are available from the official club website in advance at £20 for adults, £15 for concessions and £7 for Under 16s, Under 11s free with a paying adult. Prices increase by £2 on the match day and home fans can now pay on the gate. There is also a printed programme available at the match for £3.00.

Kick off is at 3pm
