Bromley 4-2 Chesterfield
Bromley 4-2 Chesterfield

Bromley and Chesterfield served up a six goal thriller at Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon with The Ravens coming out on top thanks to a double from Ali Al Hamadi and one each from wing backs Luke Coulson & Corey Whitely.

Bromley started the game on the front foot, Marcus Sablier shooting narrowly wide after some nice build up play and they went one up after only 12 minutes when Joe Partington played in Ali Al Hamadi who placed his powerful shot past Scott Loach and into the corner of the net for 1-0.

Chesterfield rallied from there and had a good spell of pressure, but Bromley still looked the most likely to score. Al Halmadi played in Michael Cheek who showed great footwork before seeing his shot saved by Loach for a corner.

From the set piece Sablier fired over and soon after Al Hamadi had a shot deflected wide off Tyrone Williams. Jeff King did go close with a free kick for the visitors, but then on 29 minutes a long ball from Ravens keeper Ellery Balcombe found Luke Coulson who brought the ball down and then deftly chipped it over Loach and into the net from the edge of the area to make t 2-0.

Coulson who had a man of the match display on Tuesday, was excellent again all game. With Bromley looking to press even more, Byron Webster played in Cheek who showed great strength to hold off a defender and set up Al Hamadi who saw his shot on goal deflected over.

With nine minutes to go in the first half Bromley made it 3-0 when Billy Bingham found Cheek out wide and the striker squared the ball for Al Hamadi who coolly slotted the ball home from just inside the box before being mobbed by his team mates  after scoring his first two goals for the club since joining on loan from Wycombe Wanderers.

The three goal lead only lasted two minutes though, when Liam Mandeville sent in a cross from the right which Laurence Maguire headed home unmarked at the far post to make it 3-1.

Four minutes later it was 3-2 when Mandeville again was given space on the right to cross for Tom Denton who headed the ball powerfully into the net from ten yards out and set up an intriguing second half.

The next goal was going to determine the direction of the game from here and after an open start to the second half it was Bromley who extended their lead and virtually killed the game off when James Vennings played in Al Hamadi who set up Corey Whitely who showed great composure and touch to pass the ball into the net for 4-2.

Chesterfield tried to respond again, Denton had a header saved by Balcombe low down at his near post and Balcombe then denied King who put the rebound from his shot wide of the far post.

The game turned into a real physical battle with Denton and Webster contesting with each other for every header and Denton also put Partington on the floor with a stray arm to the face as tempers frayed.

With the play wide open, Partington headed a Coulson corner just wide for Bromley, while Balcombe made a good save low down at his near post to deny Nathan Tyson after a good ball from Tom Whelan.

Coulson forced a good save from Loach low down to his right from a free kick before the pace of the game slowed as the half went on and the visitors seemed to run out of attacking ideas with Bromley holding on for the win.

This was a much improved display from Bromley, playing with freedom and looking like they were enjoying being out there again.

The three points sees Andy Woodman’s men move up to tenth in the National League ahead of their trip to another play off challenger in Solihull Moors on Bank Holiday Monday, while Chesterfield slip to seventh.
