Bromley 3-2 Bishop’s Stortford

Bromley staged a remarkable comeback to snatch a win in injury time thanks to an Adam Birchall volley after trailing 2-0 at half time and looking to be heading for another home defeat.

In swirling rain with under 300 people in attendance Bromley looked flat from the kick off and Stortford who had endured terrible traffic problems to get to Hayes Lane had the better of things.

Michael Suarez headed wide before they took the lead on 11 minutes when a deep cross was converted at the far post by the unmarked Ryan Auger.

Sheldon Sellers went close soon after before going one better on 24 minutes when he hit a curling effort from outside the box past Seb Brown for 2-0.

Bromley’s first attempt on goal came after half an hour when Moses Ademola headed Damien Scannell’s cross wide.

Frankie Merrifield missed a good chance for the visitors after another poorly defended corner before The Ravens finished the half with a strong spell of pressure, but couldn’t make the breakthrough.

The second half saw Bromley come out looking like a different team Scannell and Reece Prestedge had efforts saved by David Gregory before Rob Swaine pulled one back on 48 minutes with a header from a Louis Dennis corner that just crept over the line.

Ademola, Prestedge and Jamie Slabber all had efforts saved by the impressive Stortford keeper and it began to look like Mark Goldberg’s men had lost their momentum when Donovan Simmonds went close at the other end.

Then on 74 minutes Danny Waldren hit a superb dipping free kick from out wide the just curled in at the far post to make it 2-2.

Sub Jordan Robertson sent in a fierce low cross that Slabber just missed and he also headed a good chance narrowly over as time began to run out.

Then in injury time from another Bromley corner the ball came out to Birchall who hit a sweet volley from 20 yards that left Gregory with no chance.

This was the former Gillingham striker’s first league goal for the club and it couldn’t have come at a better time for The Ravens, he very nearly scored again at the death when his free kick from distance just sailed over.

Bromley now face Leiston at home in the FA Trophy on Saturday sitting in second place in the league and in decent form after this first half scare.
