Bromley 3-1 Grimsby Town

Bromley made it three wins in a row with a come from behind victory against high-flying Grimsby Town.

John McAtee’s free-kick had given the Mariners a first half lead but goals from Michael Cheek, James Alabi and Corey Whitely completed a fine turnaround to move Bromley into the playoff places.

A keenly contested first half saw Grimsby boss possession but Bromley create some notable opportunities.

As early as the fifth minute Billy Bingham played in George Alexander but his effort from a tight angle was saved by James McKeown.

The Ravens were to go even closer when Jude Arthurs saw his cross-cum-shot evade Mckeown but fall the wrong side of the far post.

With Bromley continuing to press – Marcus Sablier was denied by a goal saving block before Mark Cousins proved equal to McAtee’s effort at the other end.

Just as it looked like both sides would go in level at the break, McAtee broke the deadlock with a fortuitous opener. His low free kick through a crowd of legs beat Cousins at his near post to give the Mariners the lead.

Will Bapaga could and perhaps should have doubled the Mariners lead in first half injury time but Cousins was equal to the task to keep Bromley in the game.

With the rain dominating proceedings in the second half – it was Bromley who adapted the better. First Michael Cheek took advantage of some hesitant Grimsby defending to draw Bromley level just shy of the hour mark. His long range effort swirling through the rain to beat McKeown all ends up.

Buoyed by the goal, Bromley then took the lead when substitute James Alabi ran on to Corey Whitely’s pass to smash an effort beyond Mckeown.

Things were to go from bad to worse for the visitors when Michee Efete was sent off shortly after for violent conduct.

With a man advantage Whitely made sure of the victory for Bromley with a fantastic strike, cutting in from the touchline the wingback curled home from 25 yards to seal a memorable victory for the Ravens.
