Defeat at Brentwood Town ended Welling United’s four game unbeaten Isthmian League Premier Division run.

Two Welling mistakes were punished while the Wings struggled to create clear cut chances in a tightly contested match.
Sam Smith scuffed an early shot wide for the Wings before Lekan Majoyegbe worked his way through from his own half but couldn’t garner enough power on his shot to test Brentwood goalkeeper Aiden Prall. At the other end, Wyan Reid broke through and slipped in former Wing Bradley Sach who shot beyond the far post.
In the twenty-sixth minute, Brentwood went ahead. Kymani Thomas got in behind the Welling defence down the left hand side before drilling it into the middle. Mackenzie Foley could only parry it out and Charlie Edwards controlled it before placing it into the unguarded bottom corner.

Matt Cripps then met a deep free kick and volleyed it into the side netting from a tight angle. It wasn’t all one way, though, and from a Smith corner, Majoyegbe headed goalwards and Prall did well to tip it over.
Daniel Ogunleye fired over from out wide, then in first half stoppage time Foley held an Ade Cole free kick that bounced awkwardly just in front of him.
Early in the second period, Thomas got in down the left and shot beyond the far post before Reid went on a run down the other side and hit a shot from distance straight into the grateful arms of Foley. Moments later, Prall had a lucky escape when his clearance struck Azeez on the back and could have gone anywhere but it flew straight back to the hosts’ goalkeeper.

Louie Johnson shot over from twenty yards having been set up by Thomas before Brentwood added a second. Sach nicked possession and played it out to Ogunleye. He measured his pass through the right side of the Welling defence and Thomas collected it before shooting inside the far post.
Another former Wing, Scott Kashket, came on as a substitute for the hosts and had a shot that failed to hit the target.
As the match moved into the closing stages, Welling’s Dean Gunner hooked wide after Majoyegbe knocked down Lewis Gard’s free kick then a long range shot by Zak O’Keefe drew a comfortable save out of Prall.

Ogunleye had the final chance of the match when his clever turn sent two Welling defenders the wrong way giving him a clear sight of goal, but his shot flew just wide from twenty yards.
Although the Wings left the field disappointed, the damage of losing was not as bad as it might have been as the other five teams in the bottom six also lost. Therefore Welling remained outside the bottom four on goal difference having played a game fewer than the teams around them.
