Bowyer confirmed as Charlton boss

Charlton issued a statement on Wednesday confirming that Lee Bowyer and Johnnie Jackson will remain in charge of the team until the end of the season.

The transformation since Bowyer took control has been remarkable. Not only in terms of results, but the tempo, percentage of chances taken and hunger of the players are unrecognisable from the latter days of Karl Robinson’s reign.

Richard Murray had this to say about the current situation:

‎”Lee has done a fantastic job since taking charge and the results demonstrate the players have really responded to him.

“You can also hear the relationship he, along with Johnnie (Jackson), have with Charlton fans from the reaction they get on a matchday.

“The takeover hasn’t moved as quickly as we had envisaged and it was important for those players and fans to know that whatever happens there will be stability.

“At this stage, there are still two parties looking to purchase the club and everything is close but a date for a takeover is not something I am able to put a timeline on because, as we have seen, these things can take longer than expected.”

It is difficult to comprehend how a deal can be ‘close’ if there are still two parties vying for the purchase of the club. Only time will tell.

Bowyer was naturally delighted with the news and added these thoughts: ‎

“I have been really pleased with the lads. They have done everything I have asked of them since I’ve come in.

“I’m pleased that I have been given until the end of the season but the focus does not change. We want to make the play-offs and I believe we will.”

The Addicks have seven games left and currently sit sixth in the table. Five of those games are away fixtures, with Scunthorpe and Blackburn providing the opposition at The Valley.

Robinson thought 70 points would be enough to secure a play-off spot. Charlton need a manageable nine points from those seven games to hit that target, though it seems likely they will need a few more.

Fasten your seat belts, it is going to be a thrilling ride.
