Defeat at home to Bromley on Tuesday put a halt to Welling United’s winning run ahead of their visit to Boreham Wood on Saturday.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Four consecutive wins have taken the Wings out of the relegation zone and success on Tuesday would have taken them into the top half of the season.

It wasn’t to be however, and despite taking an early lead, they suffered at the hands of their local rivals.

Michael Chambers headed his first Welling goal in the opening minutes and there was a degree of controversy about the equaliser. Sam Corne had to leave the field for treatment to a cut above his left eye. Repeated requests to allow him to return to the field were ignored by the referee and Ali Fuiseini took full advantage of the extra time and space to take aim before firing into the bottom corner.

After the break, the game became very scrappy as the rain got heavier and Jack Holland scored the winner for Bromley with one of the very few moments of quality in the second half.

To make matters worse, Welling picked up injuries that will need monitoring ahead of their team selection. Chambers was unable to continue after the break, Corne was replaced with twenty minutes remaining and George Porter suffered a hamstring injury shortly before the end. Corne should be fine, but the other two are questionable.

Loui Fazakerley’s management team have ready made replacements though. If they need or want to make changes, they have strong players ready to come in.

Having won just once in their last ten matches, Boreham Wood are hovering just above the relegation zone and need points to pull away. Their home record is unspectacular and since beating FC Halifax Town in their opening fixture, they have only claimed one point in six further home games.

Wings’ supporters may recognize a couple of members of the Boreham Wood squad. Luke Howell played seven games for Welling on loan from Gillingham in the 2005/6 season.

Anthony Jeffrey signed for the Wings last season but only managed a couple of games before a serious injury curtailed his season. He joined Concord Rangers this season but has been snapped up on loan by one of his former clubs and may feature on Saturday.

Although disappointed with the result against Bromley, Fazakerley remains confident. “We’re always going to maintain a positive attitude. Hopefully, after a good session on Thursday and on Friday, we’ll be going into the game on Saturday feeling a lot more positive.”

They have good reason to be too, as the defeat against Bromley was only their second in eight games.
