Adam Coombes’ brace helped Welling United recover from their defeat on Saturday with victory at Bognor Regis Town.

Wings’ boss Jamie Coyle had said that Welling would be going flat out for a win and backed that up by playing three strikers.

Coombes made the breakthrough in just four minutes. Jamie Philpot picked him out and he fired low past Dan Lincoln.

Looking for a quick response Richard Gilot tried his luck from twenty-five yards but Bailey Vose made a good save.

Their next chance came from a half cleared cross but Jimmy Muitt fired well over.

Muitt had another chance beaten out before Vose was again called into action when saving from Ollie Pearce.

Philpot felt that he should have had a penalty when shoved over in the penalty area but nothing was given. He made Bognor pay moments later when feasting on an excellent Coombes pass and planting beyond Lincoln and into the bottom corner.

Bradley Goldberg then twice came close, first shooting over and then having a header saved brilliantly as the Wings finished the half strongly.

However, they didn’t start the second period as well and Muitt had a great chance when sent clear. Vose came out quickly to close him down and the Bognor striker could only push his shot wide.

Philpot shot just wide from twenty yards before Gilot’s deflected shot was well saved by Vose.

Lincoln was then called into action again when saving with his legs from Goldberg who had been given the chance by a good pass from Joe Healy.

Keaton Wood shot wide for Bognor before Coombes missed a great chance for Welling. Goldberg accepted a pass from Olumide Durojaiye and squared across the face of goal but Coombes was only able to slice wide.

Moments later Coombes was given another opportunity and took full advantage. Jack Jebb’s driven cross was too hot for Lincoln and he spilt it for Coombes to finish from close range.

Five minutes remained when Ibra Sekajja finished Harvey Whyte’s deflected cross but it was no more than a consolation for the Rocks.
